Dark Mofo, Mona’s winter festival (June 8–21), has released its second phase lineup announcement for this year’s slightly saturnalian celebration, with more shadowy sounds and spectacles scheduled for Hobart, Launceston, and regional Tasmania, Australia.

Act and Punishment – Pussy Riot (Russia)

Members of the feminist punk collective Pussy Riot join us for a screening of Evgeny Mitta’s extraordinary documentary, Act and Punishment (2015), about the activists and their incarceration for undermining “moral foundations” and offending “religious feelings” (Putin), followed by a Q&A with Pussy Riot’s Maria “Masha” Alyokhina and Alexander “Sasha” Bogino.

Hermann Nitsch: In Conversation (Austria)

On the occasion of his major performance of 150.Action in Hobart, Australia, the artist will join us for a conversation about his work. Worship at the altar of future-soul with Nai Palm, a Grammy Award-nominated sonic seer and lead artist of Melbourne four-piece Hiatus Kaiyote, plus support from Hobart’s ambient dreamer Ani Lou.

Infinite Corpse – Terrapin Puppet Theatre

Inspired by the surrealist drawing game ‘Exquisite Corpse’, Terrapin Puppet Theatre invites the public to scribble and scrawl a section of our gigantic corpse, projected high up above the crowds before it rots away before your very eyes. Created by Matt Daniels, Jonathon Oxlade and Sam Routledge, with tent and costume art by Tom O’Hern.

Dark Mofo Films is a curated festival-within-a-festival, taking up residence at Hobart’s historic State Cinema, presenting a searing selection of old and new cinematic delights that delves into the dark heart of contemporary culture.

“This year, we peer into the dark heart of incendiary new cinema… from the ennui and seething discontent of the Australian heartland, to the unsuspected violence lurking behind ordinary Australian suburban doors. We venture into the Southern Hemisphere’s largest haunted attraction in New Zealand, take an insider’s view of an explosive riot in the wake of the Egyptian revolution, and pry into the private traumas of devastating, unspeakable love. And we disappear into the transcendental grooves of one of our favourite Australian filmmakers, Amiel Courtin-Wilson.” – Dark Mofo Films curators James Hewison and Nick Batzias.

Dark Mofo’s curated films congregation singles out a seminal Australian film to kick-start the black beating heart of the selection. This year, the program revisits the dark underbelly of Australian culture, with a restored screening of the seminal, era-defining film, The Boys (1998).

The Dark Mofo Films program also includes Killing Ground (Aus, 2016), Boys in the Trees (Aus, 2016), Hounds of Love (Aus, 2016), Spookers (Aus/NZ, 2017), Dead Hands Dig Deep (Aus/US, 2016), The Silent Eye (US, 2016), and Clash (Egypt, 2016), with select director introductions and Q&A’s. More films to be announced on May 16.

Dark Mofo Films Panel Discussion

Industry experts and film buffs discuss the legacy of Rowan Woods’ Australian classic, The Boys (1998), and its influence on the films and filmmakers showcased by Dark Mofo Films 2017. From the suburbs to the bush, from fear of the enemy within and anxiety about what the neighbours are up to behind closed curtains, we ask what makes Australian cinema distinct?

Häxan – Maria Moles

Experimental Melbourne percussionist Maria Moles conjures up a creepy live score for Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 silent film Häxan about witchcraft, devilry and persecution in the Middle Ages. Rare 16mm print supplied and projected by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia. Presented by Dark Mofo and Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive.

Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks

Experimental ensemble Xiu Xiu (US) takes on the ever-eerie soundtrack to David Lynch’s classic Twin Peaks. Damn fine score, set to footage from the television series itself. First show sold out.

Dark Mofo and City of Hobart Winter Feast

The Dark Mofo and City of Hobart Winter Feast returns for its fifth year, taking up residence at the Princes Wharf precinct on Hobart’s historic waterfront on seven nights, across two weekends.

New announcement: three chef collaborations will take on the challenge of creating an ethically sourced, seasonal dish on charcoal barbeques. The collaborations are comprised of visiting female chefs, plus local chefs and producers, including Palisa Anderson and Amy Chanta (Chat Thai, Sydney), Analiese Gregory (Bar Brosé, Sydney), Matthew Evans (Fat Pig Farm, Cygnet), Sabine Spindler (Cornersmith, Sydney), Lilly Trewartha (Franklin, Hobart), Alistair Wise (Sweet Envy, Hobart), Danielle Alvarez (Fred’s, Sydney), and Massimo Mele (Sydney/Hobart).

But wait, there’s more: this year’s Winter Feast delectable temptations are provided by more than 60 stallholders, including Ashbolt Farm, Bruny Island Cheese & Beer Co., Women of the Vine, Fat Pig Farm, A Tiny Place, Three Japanese, The Tea Bar, Cantina Latina, and Krumbies, plus many more tantalising tastemakers.

Dark Mofo’s alternative late-night offering: a multi-venue experiential, participatory art party where you can explore a pop-up community of private clubs, hotel rooms and closed venues where feminist punk, experimental art, avant-choreography, ecosexual bathing and performance combine.

Pussy Riot DJ Set (Russia): From Russia with love: the notorious punk activists will bring the songs that inspire their revolution to a late-night DJ set and show and tell.
Club Ecosex – Pony Express: Surrender to ecosexual divination with these pandrogynous evolutionaries.
LE1F (USA): Dance floor heartbreak from a raging New York riot boi.
Chondrule Terminus: Jess Johnson (NZ) and Andrew Clarke: An assemblage of multisensory talismans adorn a throne. Would you like a seat?

Miss Blanks: This Brisvegas fashion icon, internet hooligan and femme fatale serves up raw raps and unapologetic hip-hop with great hair and a bad attitude.

A series of free talks on the theme of silence in politics, science and art, hosted by the University of Tasmania and streamed live. Speakers announced soon. Death Mask – Brigita Ozolins

An unsettling display by Tasmanian artist Brigita Ozolins of the death masks of executed Tasmanian convicts, created according to the nineteenth-century pseudoscience of phrenology, which sought to decipher an individual’s personality traits and criminal proclivities from the shape of their skull. Presented by Narryna and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in association with Dark Mofo.

Occasions – Isabel Lewis (Germany)

A series of celebratory, multi-sensory gatherings at Contemporary Art Tasmania, with Berlin-based artist, DJ, dancer, and our host, Isabel Lewis, who will be inviting participation in ‘occasions’—as art party meets indoor garden soirée—and then to explore the aftermath, left on display as decor. Presented by Dark Mofo and Contemporary Art Tasmania, curated by Scot Cotterell and designed by Juan Chacón.

Acclaimed Australian printmaker Milan Milojevic presents a wunderkammer—cabinet of curiosities—of prints, projections, dioramas and constructed objects inspired by the imaginary flora and fauna from Jorges Luis Borges’s The Book of Imaginary Beings (1957).
