“Remixes and covers, while different, are similar for me because most of the time is taken in considering how to approach the front door. A cover can literally cover, a remix can turn the faders sideways, but in all cases, like a good lighting director, the question is ‘how do I stage this?’ In the case of Tangents I decided to approach the song with pentimento in mind, so, literally covering a remix. The organ is still there, the notes played as intended, but now instead of reeds or pipes, it’s cicadas from the mountains, and so on and so on. One countryside for another.” – Jim O’Rourke
“…wait until you hear the drummer” – Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 6 Music),
“Terracotta” in 6 Music Recommends
“For four minutes, Tangents build a world teeming with quiet musical contemplation, all those colorful pieces hovering together just at the horizon, webbing around each other like clouds on an otherwise sunny day.” – Grayson Currin (Pitchfork), “Lake George” Track Review

Sydney’s resident boundary-pushers Tangents today continue their grand tradition of entrusting their “post-everything” music to a fellow world-renowned experimentalist, with a “majestic and winding” (Stereogum) remix of ‘Terracotta’ by pioneering artist and producer Jim O’Rourke out now.
Their forthcoming album ‘New Bodies’ will be released on June 15 via Temporary Residence Ltd., followed by a national tour.
Jim O’Rourke’s impressive discography spans a vast collection of albums of his own work across jazz, glitchy electronica and more, with collabs like Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and many others; he’s also produced albums for Sonic Youth, Wilco, Stereolab, Superchunk, Beth Orton, Joanna Newsom and countless more.

‘Terracotta (Jim O’Rourke Remix)’ follows a “massive, near death” rework of album cut ‘Immersion‘ by LA-based sound producer Katie Gateley (Björk, Nosaj Thing), which was praised by The Quietus, with support from community radio FBi, RTRFM and more. Upon its release in original form, ‘Terracotta’ made swift fans nationally and internationally, climbed its way onto the AMRAP Metro Charts (#10), and even scored the top spot on Four Tet’s own public Spotify playlist.
Tangents also add to their sprawling, eccentric canon today with ‘Tangents do Tangents‘, an exclusive mix for Norman Records (UK) that merges sounds from the band members’ myriad outside projects such as raven, Spartak, Icarus and more with music from their collective discography.
Following a year of touring with labelmates MONO and peers Tortoise, ‘New Bodies’ is set to be a continuation of Tangents’ rummage through countless varieties of electronics, rock, dub, noise, and free improv jazz that defines the group’s acclaimed aesthetic. A spacious, plucked cello gives way to a minimalist breakbeat tableau resting over rhythmic prepared piano; a staid electronic groove is gradually absorbed into washes of frenzied improv; staccato synths are woven into tumbling avant-rock; and shimmering free drums phase over static loops of piano, guitar and cello.
