Talented multi-instrumentalist HIGH HØØPS (aka Jordan Arts) today releases his long-awaited debut album Seasons on Planet Earth, out on A Label Called Success. An alluring blend of influences drawn from disparate genres and decades, the full-length release enters the world as the dedicated brain child of Arts’ New Zealand-based escape project, inspired and grounded at its core by groove-centric foundations and meticulous production.
Kicking off the delectable collection is “People”, firmly placing itself in a house influenced, funk centric dance dream steeped in retro nostalgia you won’t want to wake up from. Heavily influenced by Japanese electronic music, “People” sparkles in recognition to the late 90s dance tip of visual essence. Soon arrives “Madly”, maintaining a steady beat with nods to classic disco movements amplified by the producer’s contemporary synth-funk finesse. Highly acclaimed release ”Body” next returns to shake modern sonic atmospheres once again with a refreshing ambience hosting warm soulful vocals that point to 1980s R&B influences. Slowing down the rhythm, “Can I Get Love” mellows out the mood, sliced by soaring synths and funk fuelled guitar loops maintained over a thrusting beat that soon slides into “Blue Eyes”. Soulful guitar licks enrich the seductive trip-hop listen, luring you deeper into the far away worlds HIGH HØØPS so colourfully designs. “Dangerous” ft. Maesu presents his groove centric production at its finest, uniting signature crisp falsetto vocals with a smooth vocal section from US singer/songwriter Maesu. Layered upon sensual synths, driven by a percussion beat and a tasty funk bass feature, “Dangerous” will keep your body grooving from now til forever.
Signalling yet another change in the seasons, “Steady Rolling” offers another fresh slice of dream pop, with bouncing bass lines and Jordan Art’s warm and heavenly vocals. “Heatwave” picks up the pace once again with a constant body-moving beat and tastes of warping synths to leave you mesmerised and wanting more. Introducing staggering piano keys soothed by slick vocals is “Dreaming”, which soon erupts into a low moving realm driven by a deep bass and eclectic synths. “Burn It Up” brings another refreshing spin of percussion beats moving beneath the warm “who-ah”’s delivered by Arts vocal stylings. Topping off our journey through the seasons with the dreamy melodies and spine-tingling whispers of “Love On Repeat”, the collection wraps up an alluring succession of tracks that glow with one purpose: to deliver your soul to sparkling other worlds, grooving to the 60s disco or losing yourself to 00s house sounds from start to finish.
HIGH HØØPS on the album says: “I see the album as a journal entry of songs I’ve made over the last couple of seasons on planet Earth. They range from a time where romance and heartbreak, haunted blue days and red hot nights were phasing like season finales and premieres. The music is always centred around groove and melody, drawing influence from a nostalgic haze of 70s funk, 80s disco, 90s R&B and 2000s dance music romanced into a sound for the future.”
A seasoned professional in the music world, Seasons On Planet Earth comes after years of Arts making solo music on the side of his many other music projects (Kids of 88, LEISURE) and as a music video and documentary maker for the likes of Broods, Matthew Young and Avantdale Bowling Club. He has also been prolific on the features, lending his vocals to tracks by local hip-hopheroes SWIDT (“Boogie“), HIGH BEAMS (“Red Wine“) and perhaps most notably, “Comfortable“ by Moods (The Netherlands), a track clocking two million streams and climbing.
Tasked with playing every instrument, writing, producing, engineering and mixing, Seasons On Planet Earth is the end product of a deeply personal and intricate project. Intrinsically skilful, the album extends beyond a collection of songs, rather painting a portrait of Arts’ intensely impressive skillset and musical vision.
