When we first released the stems to DMA’S ‘The End’, we knew that remixing one of Australia’s most-loved bands was going to be a difficult task, but we had full faith that the triple j Unearthed community would flip this song on its head and truly make it their own.

And of course, they did. Over the past month, hundreds of Australian artists have deconstructed the single in so many different ways, impressing DMA’S with the breadth and calibre of remixes.

Faced with the difficult task of choosing a winner, DMA’S guitarist Johnny Took notes the strengths of each of the finalists, saying “It’s been great hearing all the different versions. Notably I thought it was great how in the DVNA version she incorporated her own verses and used the conga loop and added jazzy keys. The RUER remix had a similar vibe and she incorporated her own lyrics and melodies, and the harmonies at the start were particularly impressive. It was also cool to hear the Daft Punk version that MILKBEACH did and Tobiahs’ chill vibe was pretty impressive as well.”

But in the end it was Borderland State from QLD’s Sunshine Coast that impressed DMA’S the most with his re-imagination of their trackThe End, turning it into a blissed-out dream with his striking, cinematic production and a haunting piano line that’ll turn you into jelly.

On choosing Borderland State’s remix as the winner, Took said “The new keys part that he added at the start worked really well with the verse melody and we were particularly impressed with the production work that he’d done with the backing vocals. As the song built to the chorus it became quite ethereal and resonated really well with the original.”

Now, as part of the prize, Borderland State will attend a production masterclass with The Presets’ Kim Moyes, who produced DMA’S sophomore album For Now, as well as score tickets to one of DMA’S Australian shows. Plus Borderland State’s DMA’S Remix will be played on both triple j and triple j Unearthed.

A special shout out also goes to the other triple j Unearthed Remix Competition entrants who impressed us with their inventiveness, particularly our finalists DVNA, Tobiahs, MILKBEACH and RUER who took their remixes to the next level.
