St. Vincent has been awarded the Grammy for Best Rock Song for her track “Masseduction” (with co-writer Jack Antonoff) and Best Recording Package for the album of the same name (artwork by Willo Perron). This is St. Vincent’s second and third Grammy win, following 2015’s award for Best Alternative Music Album for her self-titled record. Last night’s awards also saw St. Vincent perform a duet with Dua Lipa, mashing up the Grammy-winning single with Lipa’s hit “One Kiss”, featuring an interlude cover of Aretha Franklin’s “R-E-S-P-E-C-T”.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about the performance, St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) said: “Those songs are two sides of the same coin. They’re about seduction and sex and all those things. Then we wanted to give a little nod to the late, great Queen of Soul, so it was like, ‘What if we sing R-E-S-P-E-C-T as a sort of fucked up dom-sub thing, like sex.’ I don’t know if that song has ever been sung with that intonation before.”
Following the awards, St. Vincent has now released an official music video for “Masseduction” – a surreal video featuring nuclear explosions and faceless dancers.
“Masseduction” is the title track from St. Vincent’s critically acclaimed 2017 album, released via Loma Vista Recordings / Caroline Australia. On the track, Clark said to Rolling Stone “It’s a fucked-up sex song, but it’s also a lot of other things. I’m talking about the power of seduction on every level, whether it’s sexual seduction, political seduction, totalitarianism and this need to get your rocks off.”
St Vincent last brought her spectacular live theatre show to Australia last year where she performed at Dark Mofo in Hobart and headlined Carriageworks for the Vivid lineup in Sydney.
