“He merges alt-folk, Americana and the empathetic joy that sprung Elbow from cult act to arena fillers…it’s a mighty leap forwards” – Q

“Richly textured [mixing] grandeur with grit…magnificent
Sunday Times Culture

“This is well worth the wait” ★★★★ – Star Magazine

Watson brings to the table an album of substance and delicately spun acoustic pop, thematically lighter-hearted than his debut record and earlier EPs” – themusic.com.au

“This is only Lewis Watson’s second album, yet his acoustic pop has become so plump with powerful emotions that you may feel as though a witch has fattened you up, Hansel and Gretel style.”Stack Magazine

Oxford-based singer-songwriter Lewis Watson releases his second album midnight, out now through Cooking Vinyl.

On Lewis’ new album midnight, he has developed his much-loved acoustic-pop sound into something altogether more ambitious. Drawing upon inspiration from a disparate range of influences including Death Cab For Cutie, Coldplay and Bon Iver, the album expands Lewis Watson’s musical world far beyond his debut.

Already praised by the likes of Q and the Sunday Times, it’s a dramatic and wide-ranging album that expands Lewis’ musical palette into new horizons.

Lewis has just released his new single Deep The Water taken from the album midnightThe single is a live video featuring Lewis’ backing band, which will give fans a taste of what to expect from his upcoming Australian tour. The new single sees the Lewis once again showcase his versatile vocal range and finely tuned skills in constructing mature, cultured pop songs.

The track has already received support from BBC Radio 1, with spins from both Adele Roberts and Cel Spellman, as well as significant early radio plays from Triple A in the US, where Lewis has just completed a successful stint at SXSW.

Picking up the guitar at the age of 16, Lewis first came to public attention by uploading stripped-back covers online, and it wasn’t long until the teenage singer saw views clocking up in their hundreds of thousands.

In 2012 his debut EP of original material it’s got four sad songs on it, btw went straight to the top of the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on the day of release. Sparking the attention of major labels, Lewis soon signed to Warner Bros and went on to release four more rave-reviewed EPs, all of which dominated the iTunes chart, followed by his debut album the morning in 2014.

The young British troubadour also cemented himself as a remarkable live artist, playing to sold-out crowds across the globe including headlining London’s Shepherds Bush Empire, NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and LA’s Troubadour, supporting acts such as Coldplay, Kodaline and Lianne La Havas, selling out a headline tour of Australia and appearing at festivals including Glastonbury, V, Bestival, The Great Escape and T In The Park.

Feted by the press, championed across national radio stations and boasting an enormous online following, Lewis then stepped away from the limelight to refocus and work on new material. Regaining full control he was able to take his time writing songs that fully explored his experience and talent and, with a wealth of new material to choose from, he entered the studio with producer Anthony West and recorded the entire album in just two weeks with a live band.

The result is an album of power and beauty. With midnight he has developed his much-adored acoustic-pop sound into something altogether more ambitious, yet even more affecting. It also features a duet with Lucy Rose on the achingly emotional slumber.

With a choice of labels keen for his signature after two years away, Lewis decided to find a new approach to releasing his music, partnering with the leading independent label Cooking Vinyl, and heading out on tour to showcase many of the new songs direct to his fans.
