In a short space of time Perth’s COTERIE have been making a name for themselves in the local music scene. Their debut single ‘Where We Began’ naturally and effortlessly has been making an impact with 900k streams whilst building a strong supporter base from Perth to the East Coast. Today, the four-piece release their follow-up single and video ‘Salvation’ as well as tour dates across the country, which is geared to take them even further.

Front man and guitarist Tyler Fisher says, “when we wrote Salvation, we were hoping to speak to the times & culture we’re living in. Everyone, no matter their situation or circumstance, needs a hand up at some point, sometimes life sucks. This song is essentially us communicating and relating to that part of humanity. There’s a lyric in the song ‘watch me through your bleeding eyes’, if that’s to resonate with the listener on how they respond to times like these or how they view others, then our art will do what we hoped it to.”

The black and white performance video for ‘Salvation’ was filmed at Fremantle Prison. Tyler explains further where Salvation was written, “We were staying in a tiny AirBnB in Sydney, across the road from the studio we were working at. We had all been on the same artistic wave looking to write something a bit eerie, but with a slightly epic feel to it. Our mate from Perth, Andy Hopkins had recently moved to Sydney and was coming to hang for a bit that day so as we all met up and started chatting, we realised there was a similar sound & story resonating with all of us. That night Salvation was written!”

Their debut single ‘Where We Began’, received its first spin on triple j then climbed the Australian Spotify Viral Chart to #11. MTV and Channel V championed the group with Channel V featuring COTERIE as Uncovered Artist’s, while Tone Deaf gave them a nod as “ones to watch” and Pilerats noted the brothers as “an exciting new force to come from the west coast” premiering their alt-version video of ‘Where We Began’.

Most recently and ongoing, COTERIE teamed up with triple j unearthed artists as well as established acts such as Polish Club, B Wise, Death By Denim to create a series of videos called ‘TasteMaker Series’ on YouTube. Expect to see more ‘TasteMaker’ videos throughout 2020, but for now check out the sessions here.

Music’s in COTERIE’s bones — their parents were talented musicians, ‘R’n’B mixtapes were always within reach, but the boys found love in the dirty guitars of Jimi Hendrix and although ‘Where It Began’ and ‘Salvation’ sit comfortably between soul and indie pop, the band explain that they haven’t even begun to release all the kinds of music they’re into.
