Electronic Music Conference (EMC) descends upon Sydney for its sixth year in 2017, bringing together Asia-Pacific’s electronic music community for two days of collaborative music discovery and electronic music culture celebration on November 29 – November 30. By day, EMC will see renowned guests including Andrew Weatherall, Ngaiire and Alexander Nut appear on a series of panels, workshops, talks and masterclasses. By evening, EMC welcomes the return of designated showcases in EMCPlay. Programmed by Dave Ruby Howe, some of Australia’s brightest electronic artists will take to the stage across three evenings, unveiling their incredulous talents.
From five renowned Sydney live music venues on November 28 to November 30, EMCPlay sees selected music industry tastemakers, agencies and labels throw parties dedicated to unearthing tomorrow’smusic stars. EMCPlay invites ticketholders to attend showcases curated by S.A.S.H, Of Leisure, Refuge x Double Up x One Hit Agency, Liveschool, Mellum x House of Mince, Parallel Artist x Sync Artist Management and Cakes Wines where over 55 artists are scheduled to perform.
Leading the proceedings is Sydney clubbing institution S.A.S.H, who welcome deep house legend Fred Pto the Inner West’s Sly Fox Hotel on Tuesday November 28 for an EMCPlay opening night of soul-driven house. The following evening on Wednesday November 29, Chippendale’s Lansdowne Hotel will host EMCPlay’s headline event where successful applicants such as Commandeur, Miss Blanks, Elkkle and Tiber perform. Simultaneously in Chippendale, Freda’s sees burgeoning record label Of Leisure (home to the likes of Young Franco & Jack Grace) throw an all night showcase, while The Chippo housesRefuge, Double Up and One Hit Agency’s combined roster and Cake Wines teams up with Liveschool and the Ableton User Group to present a special live video link with Ableton don Freddy Frogs, followed by Ableton Live performances from Liveschool alumni. For EMCPlay’s third evening on Thursday November 30, The Lansdowne holds a second showcase of trailblazing talent. In addition, Freda’s will host Mellum and House of Mince’s inaugural team up, Parallel Artist and Sync Artist Management take over the Chippo and Soundway Records’ Lord Echo (NZ) and Miles Cleret make their way to Cake Wines.

EMCPlay’s programmer Dave Ruby Howe shares his insights on the 2017 program: “You need only look at the biggest names in new electronic music right now to see how in demand Australian acts are at the moment. With artists like Alison Wonderland, Flume, RÜFÜS and What So Not slaying on a global scale it couldn’t be a better time to take a closer look at the next generation of local talent that’s on the rise. The collection of successful applicants that showed the most exciting potential and join the 2017 EMC Play lineup boast a bit of something for everyone with the body-shaking bass flavours of artists like Tiber and Arcane Echo, shapeshifting genre-non-conformists in Elkkle and Various Asses, and prodigious worshipers of groove like The Nights and Mickey Kojak. You’ll find emerging acts making exciting early moves at the start of their careers as well as those names like MUTO and Miss Blanks that look ready to blow at any moment. Shout out to all those acts that applied and gold stars for those who made the final lineup, there’s big things ahead.”
Alongside EMCPlay, Electronic Music Conference will present exclusive cinema screenings of select music documentaries in 2017. From Surry Hills’ Golden Age, catch the widely applauded Grace Jones biopic Bloodlight and Bami on December 2, and from Chippendale’s newly unveiled Palace Cinemas complex, see Pioneer and DJ sounds’ Why We DJ.
With over 50 artists set to perform at EMCPlay in 2017, accompanied by special guests and exclusive cinema screenings, be sure to join the week’s overflowing schedule of up-and-coming electronic music with some of Australia’s most respected labels and crews.
