Norwegian sensation girl in red, aka 20-year-old Marie Ulven who boasts a growing global audience of over 3.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify today shares her new song and official video titled Kate’s Not Here.
The track was partly written in Sydney during her Australian live debut last year where she played to a sold-out audience at The Lansdowne as well as performed alongside some of the world’s biggest rising stars including BENEE, Tove Lo and Tones And I at Spotify’s Front Left Live playlist event in Melbourne.
Speaking about how kate’s not here came to be, girl in red explains “”i made this song in the back of my tour bus, a studio in LA and on a bed in sydney. i like that the melody carries the song so much and think it slaps tbh.”
girl in red joins an all-star line-up of contributors who feature on the official soundtrack for the new Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, Handmaid’s Tale) directed film The Turning, a modern take on Henry James’ The Turn Of The Screw which stars Finn Wolfhard and Mackenzie Davis. The 90’s inspired soundtrack, produced Lawrence Rothman and Yves Rothman includes original songs by Courtney Love, Mitski, Soccer Mommy, Empress Of, Vagabon, Warpaint, Cherry Glazerr, Kali Uchis, Alice Glass, Kim Gordon, The Aubreys and more.
Floria Sigismondi who has directed music videos for the likes of David Bowie and Leonard Cohen also directed the clip for girl in red’s Kate’s Not Here where we see Ulven wander through the dark and eerie world of the set of The Turning.

From the four walls of her bedroom to global acclaim, girl in red has become something of a queer icon for fans around the world and has quickly proven herself as a young talent on the rise. 2019 year was a huge year for girl in red, having released her chapter 1 & chapter 2 EP’s in a special vinyl bundle titled beginnings and went on to tour the globe with her worldwide sold-out tours going on to total 19,000 tickets. Her most recent single bad idea! clearly connected with Australian audiences and was voted in at #156 in triple j’s Hottest 200.
girl in red’s 2020 couldn’t have started better after becoming the first Gay Times cover artist for the year, making the shortlist for NME’s Best New Act In The World as well as the announcement that she will perform alongside the likes of Frank Ocean, Lana Del Ray and Flume on the 2020 Coachella 2020 line-up.
We can also expect to hear lots more very soon from girl in red, earlier in the month she teased the release of a forthcoming release via social media. She revealed via Instagram “2020 is the year of public mirror selfies and also my album” as well as via her twitter account declaring of the upcoming special delivery “pregnant with album.”
