Grill For Good Raises $210,000

Melbourne’s music and hospitality communities come together for the Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities and Wildlife Victoria.

The Grill For Good fundraiser raised $210,000 to be shared between the Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities and Wildlife Victoria.

The all-ages vegan-friendly sausage sizzle was conceived and executed in under a week, with Melbourne’s music and hospitality community banding together to host thousands of punters at Victoria Park on Sunday 12 January, with “Grill Master” Mac DeMarco at the helm. The event was announced on-sale on Thursday 9 January, with all 5,500 tickets selling out in under 5 hours.

DeMarco, who could be spotted all day taking photos with fans and turning sausages, was joined by friends from the community who donated their time behind the grill and the decks, including Amyl and the Sniffers, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, CHAI (Japan), Soju Gang, Tim Sweeney (US), Cable Ties, Remi and friends, Miss Blanks, Pond, Rolling Blackouts CF, Julia Jacklin and a cameo appearance from the Richmond Tigers’ Matthew ‘Richo’ Richardson.

Melbourne chefs Tobie Puttock, Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters and Smith & Deli), David Moyle and others were on hand to guide the guest grillers. Bars were run by local beer and wine purveyors Blackhearts & Sparrows.

The event was produced and promoted by a group of independent businesses and individuals from the Australian music industry lead by 33 Events, The Boss Experience Agency and Penny Drop.

On top of the ticket sales, an additional 892 donations were made online. All ticket sales, bar and grill takings, merchandise sales and additional donations made online and on the day are being donated equally between the following two causes.

Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities is a gofundme campaign initiated and maintained by Neil Morris, a Yorta Yorta First Nations man and community rights and empowerment advocate for fellow First Nations peoples. Very sadly, many First Nations People have been affected by these tragic bushfires, have lost their homes or been forced to evacuate. The Fire Relief Fund aims to help recover some of the costs for impacted individuals. Donate or learn more here.

Wildlife Victoria helps shelters and carers rebuild enclosures and equipment lost in the fires so they can continue their lifesaving work, and supports those struggling to cope with the enormous number of animals that will need care in the coming weeks and months.

Grill For Good would like to thank every sponsor, supplier, chef, musician, supporter and volunteer for their time and efforts, without whom the fundraising effort could not have gone ahead. Grill For Good encourages people to continue to donate and support these causes for bushfire relief.
