GUM, the moniker of Tame Impala/Pond multi-instrumentalist Jay Watson has today released the new single and video ‘The Blue Marble.’ The claymation visuals mark the next release from forthcoming record The Underdog out April 6th via Spinning Top/Caroline Australia.
With Yah Yah’s, Melbourne already sold-out (April 6th), GUM’s headline album tour begins this month in his hometown. The national tour includes an appearance at Victorian Festival By The Meadow, before heading to Oxford Arts, Syd and The Brightside, Brisbane. Local supports include Ben Witt, Worried About Lizards, Emerson Snowe, Candy, e4444e, San Mei and Stevie.
‘The Blue Marble’ follows double single release ‘The Underdog’ and ‘S.I.A.’ Directed by Alex McLaren (ORB, School Damage and The Murlocs), with assistance from friend and frequent collaborator Sean McAnulty, the clip was created over the course of two months. Crafting scenery and characters out of play-dough, the result sees the viewer transported to numerous claymation cosmic dimensions.
Described as “an endlessly flexible musical polymath,” Watson’s ability to traverse multiple genres is evident in his latest sonic offerings. Mixed and recorded himself, GUM describes his fourth LP as
“The soundtrack to a day in the life of GUM. Starting before going out at night, full of spirit and euphoria and feeling like it’s me against the world, before crashing and waking up riddled with anxiety and panic, only to build myself up to do it all again.”
With a series of sold-out headline shows in 2017 and appearance on the line-up for Gizzfest, GUM is no stranger to packed venues. Having supported the likes of Mac DeMarco and Mini Mansions, the multi-instrumentalist is set to support Angel Olsen on her solo tour this March. The new LP follows GUM’s 2014 debut Delorean Highway, 2015’s Glamorous Damage, and 2016’s Flash In The Pan. In 2018, ‘The Underdog’ is set to entice a new legion of GUM fanatics and firmly establish Watson’s distinctive sound.
