Following sold-out shows last month in Perth, Melbourne, LA, NY & London, GUM the moniker of of Tame Impala/Pond multi-instrumentalist Jay Watson has shared the video for ‘Couldn’t See Past My Ego.’ The single is the latest track to be lifted from The Underdog LP, out now via Spinning Top Records/Caroline Music.
Directed by Sam Kristofski (GUM ‘Gemini’ and POND ‘Fire In The Water’) the video was filmed earlier this year during POND’s appearance at Laneway Festival. Shot on the West Coast North Island of New Zealand using 35mm Fuji Film, Kristofski says
“The concept never really came to us, we started filming because Jay only had a small window and the sun was setting, this is what happened. After we finished shooting we all had a sauna and knew we had filmed something special.”

The visuals are a departure from previous clip ‘The Blue Marble,’ (directed by Alex McLaren) which utilised stop-motion to create a claymation cosmic dimension. Described as “an endlessly flexible musical polymath,” Watson’s ability to traverse multiple genres is evident in his latest sonic offerings. Mixed and recorded himself, GUM describes his fourth LP as “The soundtrack to a day in the life of GUM. Starting before going out at night, full of spirit and euphoria and feeling like it’s me against the world, before crashing and waking up riddled with anxiety and panic, only to build myself up to do it all again.”
Having supported the likes of Mac DeMarco, Mini Mansions, and Angel Olsen, as well as a series of headline shows across Australia, Europe, UK and the US, GUM is no stranger to packed venues. The new LP follows GUM’s 2014 debut Delorean Highway, 2015’s Glamorous Damage, and 2016’s Flash In The Pan. With rave reviews, ‘The Underdog’ has enticed a new legion of GUM fanatics and firmly established Watson’s distinctive sound.
