At the beginning of 2018 Hurst introduced audiences to their 90s nostalgia-meets-pop grit sound, teasing them with their latest anthems, ‘Rattle Kids’ and current single ‘Purple & Green’ – both of which have received airplay on Triple j. The band now returns from Sydney’s deep suburbia to share their Second EPsadface., scheduled for release on Friday, July 13th.

The EP was written, recorded and produced entirely by the band. Initially starting out as a project to push their own limits with little to no budget, the experiment slowly warped into preparation for their second EP, sadface.. Drums were tracked in a huge thousand-seater church on NSW’s Central Coast, while the rest of the band laid down their parts in the bedrooms and pantry’s of their own homes.

“We got to a point where we just wanted to get our music out there, rather than stay dormant and be limited by the money in our wallets. I admit, I was incredibly reluctant with the idea of doing it without a producer in a proper studio, but the boys have totally come through and we’ve all grown a lot closer as a band and as people.”

The EP is laden with an overarching apathetic angst met with confession-box lyrics on mental health, finding hope in admitting vulnerability, and celebrating diversity. The EP presents the overall message that even when life isn’t a joyride and doesn’t make sense, sometimes you need to just kick off the dust and dance.

“I think it’s easy today – being so bombarded by headlines that preach fear overseas and fear in our everyday lives – to fall in-line with what’s easy and simple just to survive. Whether it be falling in line with your job, falling in line with who you choose to be with, or falling in line with your state of mind. Everyday I’m conflicted and suffocated with apathetic ideas that ‘my life sucks’ and ‘my life doesn’t suck that much so stop complaining’.

The six tracks from “sadface.” are a loud execution of that internal conflict I face with the hope that these songs would remind me to pursue real joy, regardless of what’s happening around me or to me… simply put, I penned these lyrics to give myself a reason to get out of bed and kick life in the head and keep creating. The boys and I worked to create something raw, punchy and exhilarating… despite all things, we created fun from sad things.”

sadface. is six tracks packed with raw grit, infectious melodies, and anthems that will have you jumping around your bedroom and pulling some serious air guitar shapes.
