Today Launceston’s Junction Arts Festival unveils its 2018 program, five action packed days and nights of authentically Tasmanian art, food and wine, architecture and music.

Now in its eighth year, Junction 2018 invites locals and mainland visitors to come together and experience all that this incredible region has to offer.

Junction’s Creative Director Greg Clarke said “Through collaborations with Tasmania artists, dancers, performers and musicians, and presenting that work in spaces unique to Launceston, we have been able to create a fully immersive and intimate Tasmanian experience like no other. Come and meet the locals!”

The diverse program of 25+ events includes theatre, dance, music, performance, monumental installations, storytelling, cabaret, architecture, communal feasts, roller skating (yes!) and more.

From lavish disco-themed parties to world premieres, unique Tasmanian indigenous performances, an upside down nightclub, award-winning food and wine, a Tweed Run bicycle ride and entry to some of the wildest buildings in the city – read on for just a few highlights from Junction 2018…

Start your Junction journey at the Festival Hub in Prince’s Square. Here you’ll find a free music venue with the hottest bands and producers from across the state. Check out the best local food trucks and indulge in some of Tassie’s fine produce. Be a part of the artwork with Terrapin Theatre’s Infinite Corpse or bask in the beauty of projection artist Jen Brown’s nightly works.

Slip into Junction’s own cabaret venue Junction’s Little Devil to see award-winning performances, cabaret and children’s shows or catch the sunset with a glass of one of the excellent local drops.

An unforgettable world premiere performance, Roundabout features Launceston’s Devil State Derby League, Launceston College dance students and the Allstar Cheer and Dance Tasmania come together in a dance, music and roller disco spectacular around Prince’s Square’s stunning Val d’Osne Fountain. Created by Junction Creative Director Greg Clarke in collaboration with choreographer Virginia Ferris with an original score by Launceston DJ and music producer Je Bahl.

Journey of the Free Words is a three part theatrical music odyssey that chronicles the hand delivery of a letter, written by a palawa person and addressed to their oppressor across the sea. Performed by some of lutrawita’s best first nations artists, Journey of the Free Words and it’s creative process makes for a historical and musical discovery for both audience and performer.

Junction’s much-loved Tweed Run is an annual bike ride around Launceston’s historic centre and it’s iconic landmarks. Jump on your bike and don your tweeds and your best traditional cycling attire. This year’s ride includes the stunning 19th Century City Park plus a lovely post-ride treat of cucumber sandwiches and refreshments back at Prince’s Square.

Open House Launceston (presented by Open House Hobart) takes you on a journey through Launceston’s rich tapestry of architecture and into extraordinary buildings usually not accessible to the public. Classic examples of Victorian, Federation and Colonial  design sit alongside an internationally recognised Brutalist treasure, quintessential Art-deco detailing and an Egyptian synagogue.

Tim Ross presents Design Nation Live, a nationally touring talk inviting guests to rediscover ubiquitous, everyday objects of Australian design through previously untold stories and design narratives, revealing how our unique design histories have helped shape our national identity. Interwoven with funny anecdotes and stories about growing up in the 70s and 80s in Australia, this show is a must see.

Tamar Valley Feast is the ultimate Northern Tassie food and wine experience. Tamar Valley Feast celebrates the wine and produce of the Tamar Valley, cooked on open fires by Tasmanian culinary wizards Hubert & Dan. Take in the sunset as you drink award-winning wines with a soundtrack from local musicians, all presented in one of the north’s most picturesque locations, Tamar Ridge Cellar Door.

Staged inside Launceston’s oldest Church, Breathtaking will see three extraordinary Tasmanian singers stun audiences with the sheer beauty and power of their remarkable voices. Sakthi Ravitharan performs in the Carnatic music style – a Hindu spiritual form of music from Southern India. 18 year old Medhanit Barrett delivers a freshness to every note she sings. EWAH & The Vision of Paradise play music with a cinematic narrative that informs the emotion of EWAH’s sublime voice.

Nitty Gritty: True Stories told by Humans delivers two powerful storytelling events by local storytellers over two nights. Created and hosted by comedian Rachel Berger, get down to the nitty gritty in these authentic stories that aim to connect people, heal wounds and diminish a sense of ‘us and them’.

Olivier Award-winning UK playwright Mike Bartlett tackles the big questions of our times in Wild, a darkly comic play, based on the case of Edward Snowden, the American whistleblower who leaked classified information from the US National Security Agency.  This Tasmanian premier will be presented by Launceston’s Relevant Theatre Company.

Junction will delight the whole family with hand-picked performances bringing the best and most sought-after children’s events to Lonnie! Kaput is Tom Flanagan’s multi-award winning family show that has melted hearts of all ages around the world. Plus The Mr Spin Show – a thrilling circus and comedy show for children of all ages mixes juggling with mad–capped antics and an incredible sense of fun, not to mention a few hat tricks thrown in!

Spring is the perfect time to visit Tasmania’s wild north! Junction’s program has been designed to ensure that visitors can experience the majority of the festival’s key events in one amazing weekend. So come to Tassie for Junction and stay on to explore the many natural treasures of this beautiful region.
