JXN (pronounced Jackson) has released his debut single ‘Solitude’. Born Jackson Brazier, he’s made a name for himself amassing more than a million followers across YouTube and Instagram but now the 25 year old is embarking on his most important venture yet, as one of Australia’s most promising new artists.
‘Solitude’ is an impossibly accomplished introduction that defines who JXN is an artist. It’s a slick, late night jam blending modern RnB influences with pop sensibilities inspired in part by DIY Soundcloud artists who have crossed over into the mainstream.
‘Solitude’ was created in Sweden with local writer and producer Johan Gustafson who has worked with Icona Pop and Korean megastars Girls Generation. Together, they’ve written something that’s raw and honest with JXN digging up past relationships and detailing that emotional rollercoaster of staying with someone even though you know it’s not quite right.
Brazier met Gustafson while he was on a writing trip in Australia. The producer invited him back to Sweden to co-write with him and a number of trips later, his ventures have proved fruitful.
‘Solitude’ is a triumphant moment for Brazier as it comes after years of chipping away at a music career both online and in his studio. It’s a breakup song that taps into a universal emotion which is part of the reason why he decided it was the perfect song to kick-off his career as JXN.
“Pretty much everyone has been through what that song says,” he says. “It’s a bedroom song or a rainy day car song. Looking out the window with the rain, headphones on.”
Music has always been the end goal for Brazier and the JXN project is the result of a number of years working towards it. Music sound tracked his childhood as he grew up in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Eventually, he decided he needed to learn it for himself. At 13, JXN taught himself how to play guitar through YouTube tutorials long before he would find himself on the platform playing for thousands. At 17, he’d saved up enough money to buy himself a Maton guitar and later set up his own DIY home studio so that he could upload covers online. Before that, he’d been intent on a professional basketball career but was led to focus seriously on his music when a back injury forced him into a hiatus.
Brazier gained traction online uploading covers on Vine and YouTube which gained popularity quickly. Now, some of his covers have hundreds of thousands of views with Brazier taking on everything from Jack Johnson to Twenty One Pilots. His most recent covers of artists like Drake and Khalid are more in line with the music inspiring his originals.
“It’s so crazy that I am finally getting to release my first song, after working so hard on it – it has been a process to get here to say the least but I have loved every minute of it”.
JXN masterfully defines his artistic vision on ‘Solitude’. It’s the start of a career for an artist who knows exactly what he wants to be but is also open to experimenting and opening new doors. He’s headstrong and ambitious, armed with the tunes to take him from his DIY Australian studio to the world.
