Pioneering Gothenburg-based outfit Little Dragon return today with their latest single “Hold On”, out via Ninja Tune. Fronted by enigmatic vocalist Yukimi Nagano, with multi-instrumentalists Håkan Wirenstarnd and Fredrik Wallin on keyboards and bass respectively and Erik Bodin on drums and percussion, today’s release arrives with the news of their forthcoming studio album New Me, Same Usentering the world on Friday, March 27.
An instantly recognisable cut from the four-piece, “Hold On” perfectly encapsulates Little Dragon’s firm hold at the centre of their multi-genre universe while delivering a message of breaking away and moving on. Spearheaded by dynamic vocalist Yukimi Nagano, the single merges intricate electronic textures, body-moving rhythms and innate grooves, veering between electronica and soul effortlessly.
Showcasing yet again their proudly left-of-centre sound and impeccable production, “Hold On” arrives today as the first taste of Little Dragon’s forthcoming album New Me, Same Us. Entirely self-produced and recorded at their long-term home-built studio in Gothenburg, the LP represents another chapter in the continuing evolution of Little Dragon, finding new direction in their unique style of unhurried, off-kilter R&B, pop and electronics, they sound as rejuvenated and energised as ever. The record also finds them in a reflective mood, Yukimi’s distinctive vocals musing on transitions, longing, and saying goodbye. Little Dragon say of the forthcoming record:
“This album has been the most collaborative for us yet, which might sound weird considering we’ve been making music together for all these years, but we worked hard at being honest, finding the courage to let go of our egos and be pieces of something bigger.”
Since releasing their debut, self-titled album back in 2007, Little Dragon have built a well-earned reputation as one of the most consistent bands to date, unafraid to continually evolve and change their sound from record to record. From their breakout 2011 album Ritual Union, 2014’s Grammy-nominated Nabuma Rubberband and 2017’s critically acclaimed Season High, the group have found an incomparable niche in their deep understanding of melding genres, both balancing their acclaimed sonic identity whilst forever pushing forward into new musical territories. Outside of their own work, the band’s back catalogue also bursts with an enviable list of collaborators including BADBADNOTGOOD, Gorillaz, SBTRKT, Flying Lotus, Flume, Kaytranada, Big Boi (who was first put on to the band via fellow Outkast member André 3000), De La Soul, DJ Shadow, Tinashe,Mac Miller, Future and more.
Renowned for their finely tuned live show, Little Dragon have had numerous landmark festival appearances at the likes of Glastonbury, Coachella, Bestival, Lollapalooza, Melt, Dour, Sonar and Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw, as well as a co-headline show with Flying Lotus at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Soon to be embarking on a mammoth headline tour across Europe and the US, Little Dragon will continue to enamour audiences across the globe in 2020 and beyond.
Foreshadowing what’s to come from the new album, “Hold On” is the perfect encapsulation of Little Dragon’s eccentric and vibrant sound and a timely taste test for the four-piece’s next body of work, New Me, Same Us.
