Ahead of the release of “The Special Ones – Best Of”on November 23, Missy Higgins shares a heart-warming video for album track, ‘All For Believing’.
.
. . . . . . . . .Shot when Missy was just 15, it captures the first recording of the song, as Missy explains:
“This video is of me creating the very first recording of ‘All For Believing’. It’s the basic piano recording before we added the other sounds like percussion and cello. I am so young in this I can’t believe it was so long ago, ah! I must have been 15 or something. We were in a hotel room with some basic equipment recording it for Roland… technically my first gig! We chose a hotel room for the quietness factor but fate would have it that a group of bagpipe players decided to use the park right outside our window as their place to practice that day. So there’s probably some subtle hints of bagpipe in the recording somewhere!” – MISSY HIGGINS
Coinciding with the release of “The Special Ones – Best Of”comes MISSY HIGGINS & FRIENDS LIVE, following on from previous ABC concert broadcasts from Crowded House and Paul Kelly. Missy will perform some of her most loved songs, live at an intimate show in the Melba Spiegeltent in Melbourne. Joining her for some collaborations and covers are Peter Garrett, Kasey Chambers, Dan Sultan, Gretta Ray, and Ben Abraham, in a show not to be missed! Hosted by Double J Mornings presenter and ABC Music Correspondent Zan Rowe, the 90min performance will be aired across ABC, iview and Double J radio from 8.40pm Sunday November 25.
‘All For Believing’ marks the very start of Missy’s journey, when her sister successfully submitted the song to the Triple J Unearthed demo competition way back in 2001. It was written when Missy was 15 years old but even at that early stage her signature character is undeniable – those yearning melodies woven together with that earnest and distinctively Australian vocal. The recording and film footage taken at the time were only rediscovered a few months ago and this is the first time they have been seen or heard in public.
“The Special Ones – Best Of” bookends Missy’s creative journey and features three previously unreleased tracks, plus 16 handpicked songs that span a stellar career. It opens with her most recent recording; a new song called ‘Arrows’, recorded less than 3 days before Missy gave birth to her new baby daughter. The next track is ‘All For Believing’, followed by a slew of Missy classics – #1 singles ‘Scar’ and ‘Steer’, radio favourites ‘Futon Couch’, ‘Ten Days’, and ‘Unashamed Desire’ plus epic ballads like ‘Everyone’s Waiting’, ‘The Special Two’ and her Gold U.S. single ‘Where I Stood’. Nestled amongst these songs are fan favourites ‘Oh Canada’, ‘Torchlight’, ‘Don’t Tell’, a previously unreleased live version of the classic ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’ captured in front of over 80,000 people on the Ed Sheeran stadium tour last February, and another brand new original song, ‘Run So Fast’ which features local singer/songwriter Ben Abraham.
“The Special Ones – Best Of” pays homage to one of Australian music’s strongest modern catalogues; a body of work that has generated over a million album sales in this country alone while yielding 23 ARIA Award nominations and 9 wins.
Next January/February Missy will hit the road for a dozen shows around most of Australia including iconic venues like Perth’s King’s Park, Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl and the Sydney Opera House Forecourt (see full dates below). She has also added a new headline show for the Gold Coast on March 2, where she’ll be joined by acclaimed singer songwriter Dan Sultan. The fact that she will be commanding crowds of 5,000-10,000 people on this tour, nearly 15 years after her massive breakthrough album “The Sound Of White” is testament to the quality music Missy Higgins has created consistently both live and in the studio across all those years.
