Newer Volcanics will be the performance of a suite of songs written by The Orbweavers, with accompanying visuals, about the western waterways of Melbourne, performed at The Substation arts centre in Newport on Thurs 29 and Fri 30 November. The content of the songs and performance will focus on geology, industrial history and environmental change post-settlement, around western Melbourne waterways through the 19th and 20th centuries.

The performance will consist of songs and visuals, with an atmospheric production design by filmmaker and art director Brian Cohen. The performance will include all members of The Orbweavers live band: acoustic & electric guitar, trumpet, keyboard, bass and percussion, with the added musical richness of The Letter String Quartet.

Newer Volcanics refers to a geological province in south-east Australia. It includes the country south-west of Narrm (Melbourne), the sovereign lands of the Wathaurong, Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. A landscape characterised by watercourses carved through ancient volcanic plains, silty clays, estuarine sediments, and low lying tidal salt marshes of abundant birdlife, where creeks and rivers meet the sea. Much of the land in the inner-west of Melbourne city has been has been paved and overlaid through the impacts of colonisation and industrialisation. The waterways and their immediate surrounds persist in industrialised areas, a living thread of the past and the present, a continuing flow and force through time.

The Orbweavers research for ‘Newer Volcanics’ over the past two years has brought them to psychogeography, histories, environments, industries, and to creative spaces where they try to acknowledge the weave all these elements make. Through their songwriting and creative work, they acknowledge that they are descendants of settlers writing on land where sovereignty was never ceded, and pay attention to the impacts of colonisation on lands and waters.

In creating these works for performance, using words, melody, historical and contemporary visuals, they hope to draw attention to different parts of Melbourne, and particularly to layers of place, and share their personal stories that connect them with the place.
