Last here for Download Festival in 2019, Polish Black Metal lords, Behemoth, are back in Australia for a run of Good Things Festival appearances, as well as some sideshows. Having already played the first show on this run in Auckland during the week, The Triffid in Brisbane got to host the first of several Australian shows. We went along for a look & listen.

Attending a Behemoth show is not just an ordinary gig. The band not only take you into the darkest realms of extreme metal, but also at times, a complete transcendent experience. Visually Behemoth have few peers. They always put on a spectacular show complete with plenty of Pyro on an outdoor stage, & when playing an intimate club gig like at The Triffid, they still put together a fantastic stage production. Tonight was no exception.

First to take the stage & warm up the crowd were Melbourne band, Munt. This five-piece group play some Black Grinding Death Metal with plenty of passion. Having never seen the lads live before, I was impressed with what they had to offer. By the reaction of the crowd that arrived early, they seemed to agree with me. I think Munt made some new fans from the performance.

Next up, another band I wasn’t familiar with, Golgothan Remains from Sydney. A four piece, these guys go deep into the Obscure Death Metal genre with an attitude. Plenty of onstage energy, pummelling drums & nasty guitar riffs all round. Having limited stage space didn’t affect these guys. Vocalist Matthieu Van Den Brande was a beast. He commanded the stage & his guttural throat destroyed. The crowd, which by now, was near capacity, roared their appreciation at the end of each song. If you’re into this genre of Metal, Golgothan Remains is a band definitely worth checking out. Released last year, their current album is titled Adorned In Ruin.

OK… so now we come to the main act, the mighty Behemoth. Main Man Nergal appears on stage & proceeds to perform his ritualistic summoning of the Dark Lords before the rest of the band appear & greet the crowd. Bass player Orion, Guitarist Seth & Drummer extraordinaire Inferno, are called to arms & ready to pummel the sold-out crowd. Seeing Behemoth in a room this size is going to be something to behold. The band launch into Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer followed up by Malaria Vvlgata. As expected, the band sound massive! Vocalist / Guitarist / Front Man Nergal commands the stage as the malevolent high priest of metal, his charisma on show for all to see. After some friendly banter with the crowd Nergal & Co treat the fans with renditions of Conquer All, a brilliant version of Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel, Once Upon A Pale Horse, a cracking Bartzabel, No Sympathy For Fools with a few more I couldn’t recall due to my brain being overloaded with a heavy dose of Polish Extreme Metal. Of course, they finish up with O Father O Satan O Sun. The roughly hour and a half set left all in attendance mesmerized. A Behemoth live concert isn’t just a music performance, it’s a cathartic experience that takes the audience into a world of darkness & transcendence. The world of Behemoth.
