The night commenced with palpable anticipation among the fans of Fifth Dawn, eager to experience their performance firsthand. The crowd began to fill the venue early, anticipating the first of the four bands scheduled for the evening. For me, it was also a debut at the Bergy Bandroom, and I must say, it’s a fantastic venue—cozy and well laid out.

Kicking off the night were Melbourne alt-rockers 50Fifty, launching into their set with a heavy energy that immediately ignited the crowd. They showcased tracks from their 2023 EP, “Fractured,” such as “Dreaming in Colour,” along with a single not featured on the EP called “Lost and Suspended.” Their music delivered excellent vocals, both clean and harsh, along with captivating guitar riffs and dynamic drumming, making them irresistible for dancing.

Following them were another local act, the alt-metal band New Million. One notable aspect was the absence of a bass player in both bands; instead, they featured two guitarists, a vocalist, and a drummer. This seems to be the direction modern rock and metal are taking, but it doesn’t detract from the sound. The singer’s clean and harsh vocals complemented the band’s instrumental prowess perfectly. Their catchy tunes, including “Vices,” “At Least Pretend,” “Crown,” “Forever Now,” “Health,” and even an unreleased track titled “Idol,” kept the audience engaged.

Taking the stage next were the punk-infused alt-metal band from New South Wales, Aurateque. They commanded immediate attention with their high-energy, chaotic performance. Their dedicated fanbase was evident, but for many, including myself, they were a new discovery. Their fast-paced set included moments where the guitarists dove into the crowd, surrounded by enthusiastic audience members. It was clear they were giving their all, marking the final show of their tour with an unforgettable performance.

Finally, the moment many had been waiting for arrived as the underrated NSW rockers Fifth Dawn took the stage. I’ve been a fan since discovering their incredible song “Turbulence” from their 2015 EP, “The Horizon.” Despite the surprise success of their 2018 debut album, “Duality,” they remained largely unnoticed by many. However, tonight’s performance showcased their talent, featuring a blend of old and new material, including the new song “Blood Eyes.” Frontwoman Sam Faul’s captivating vocals easily drew the audience in, surpassing even the studio recordings. The crowd sang along passionately, a testament to Fifth Dawn’s growing popularity. Their debut performance in Melbourne drew a sizable crowd, highlighting the allure of the Bergy Bandroom. Fifth Dawn left everything on the stage, confirming their status as a must-see live act. Their exploration of heavier soundscapes was evident in their new singles, hinting at exciting developments to come.

Closing the night with their hit song “Pressure,” Fifth Dawn left the crowd satisfied, delivering a performance worthy of larger venues. Despite its intimate setting, the Bergy Bandroom proved to be an ideal space for live music, leaving me eager to return someday.

If you haven’t discovered Fifth Dawn yet, I highly recommend checking them out on streaming services. And if they happen to be on tour in your area, don’t miss the chance to see them live.
