Alexis Naylor.

Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I have always wanted to perform, however singing was the last piece of the puzzle in highschool, being a front woman to my highschool rock band named “Skope”. I’d been writing songs on my own before then but definitely being part of a band gave me the song writing bug. Being around the guys in the band and watching them create, started a fire that has never stopped!

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I’ve been told that my voice is powerful, alternating between soft and sorrowful and angry and accusative, much of my music taps into deeper experiences. It is through this unfiltered approach that I engage audiences at my live shows.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Hands down, Australian Artist, the one and only, Ben Abraham with his song ‘War In Your Arms’. If you haven’t heard it, make sure you do, it’s a banger in every way it counts!

Your new single ‘Long Lost Letter’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Off the back of my “pages from a past life” album, I was still personally heartbroken but was starting to feel hopeful for the future. Open to finding someone who would take my heart and my pain, and who would love me even when I wasn’t at my best. It’s not always easy to find someone like that, but it’s worth the search, so I wrote this song in the form of a letter, out to the world.
The song started when I was in Alice Springs on my “pages from a past life” tour, I found myself humming a little tune and singing a few sentences. It evolved from there, applying piano and later performing it with 5 part harmony at a show at the end of that tour. At that point I knew I needed to record it! This song’s message is of hope, optimism and above all else finding happiness.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
I’m actually in the middle of recording my next EP. I’m super excited as I’m taking a new direction and working with a dear friend, producer Dan Ablett here in Perth.
For now, I am focused on filming a few music videos for a few upcoming singles for the new year!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
OMG, totally would be the Wasia Project! They are a brother & sister dream team, writing and performing such beautifully emotive music!

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
As I am taking a new direction with my upcoming EP, I’d love to put a dream team band together and tour the new sound! It will be such a vibe, can’t wait to share the new sounds!

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Try everything! Perform with different people, do all the gigs and definitely try all genres and instruments. Just try everything and have fun with it! Be a big kid and just play! And let it evolve however it will!

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
By far, connecting with people. By sharing my stories, opening up the dialogue to talk and discuss subject matter that we don’t always hold space to speak about. I once was at a show where 3 women came up to me explaining that after listening to my song “diamond” they felt that they could deal with the engagement ring that they had at the bottom of their jewelry box. In my pain and heartbreak, I am still able to give someone else power and strength, what an honor and a gift to ne able to do that! The power of music!
