Boii

.

Afro-pop princess BOII introduced herself with dream-like textures across her vibrant cut “Credit Alert”.

A refreshing, effervescent presence, the Sierra Leonean vocalist instantly defines herself as one of the most promising artists emerging across the African landscape. Sharp and infectious from the offset, “Credit Alert” perfectly embodies a blazing Afro-swing vibe, forming melodic pockets for the young talent to flaunt her effortless cadence while exploring an exciting new love interest. Poised with bright-eyed percussion and rolling basslines produced by Nigerian frontrunner Masterkraft (Wizkid, Justin Bieber, Tekno), the two showcase an unshakeable synergy that will no doubt draw attention to the 18-year-old talent now cementing herself as a significant new name breaking into wider consciousness.

Boasting rich cultural heritage that shines through her sleek, melodic musical reflex, BOII has been surrounded by powerful inspiration from an early age – growing up in the heart of Freetown, Sierra Leone exposing her to some of the most vibrant influences across contemporary music and culture, as well as a prodigious work ethic that includes currently studying for a law degree.

With “Credit Alert” certifying its status as a breakout hit for the young artist, now sitting on well over 1M streams across DSPs, BOII’s infectious soundwaves have already received critical attention from key African tastemakers incl. TOOXCLUSIVE and WETALKSOUND, while also gaining placement as AUDIOMACK’s Discover: Afrosounds cover star – underlining just how reactive the track has been.

With her debut EP confirmed in the pipeline again working with Lagos’ key beatmaker Masterkraft, mark BOII as a captivating new breakout name in the landscape.

Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
Yes. As cliche as it may sound, it’s always been music ever since I learnt how to talk. I was six when I wrote my first song. So I guess that’s when the bug got me.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I’d describe it as a little bit of Boii and the world. My music I would say is relatable and fun. So it’s like an escape from the realities of the world.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I’m greatly inspired by SZA and Daniel Caesar’s music. But every live performance Miss Mariah Carey ever did still makes me cry. And Miss Ayra Starr never fails to inspire me presently.

Your latest single ‘Credit Alert’ has been gaining significant attention across the landscape, describe its origin and evolution.
“Credit Alert” is one of those songs I thought was fun and people would find interesting. I’m glad I wasn’t wrong. It originated from the studio itself but with more thought, it’s kinda a depiction of me turning 18 and getting a sort of freedom that I’ve always wanted and the idea of having adult money and doing what I wanted with it just sounded fun to me.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Yeeeessssss. I’m so excited actually. My sound is versatile and the EP that’s coming will show people just what I can do. And I feel each song would resonate with a different niche of people. So I’m very excited for that.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’d love to spill all the juicy details but I’ll have to hold back a bit so you’ll just have to wait. But I can say I am looking forward to tons of performances and my absolutely beautiful fans can expect visuals and new songs.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I’d love to perform with Rema. He just has unbeatable energy and I feel like being on a stage with him would be magical.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I wanna tour round the world performing infront of thousands of people. Singing all my songs with the people that love it. I wanna be on tons of fun interviews and podcast. And last but not least I wanna be an award holder. As for how I’m progressing… You can’t always say your plans. You might jinx them.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Have a plan. It’s not always about having the dream. You obviously have to have a dream but it’s the plan to put it into action that really counts. Recording and putting out music is great but hectic. So get a system.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Having fans sing out lyrics that you probably even forgot. Just to see how much people relate and resonate with your art is heart warming.
