Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be a musician?
It lingered in the background of my mind growing up, but I also wanted to be an elite athlete. I was very driven, I still am. I was a swimmer, then moved to track and field. I realised that I really didn’t love sport as much as I saw my other friends loving it. My love for music was just always there behind anything else I tried. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else now. When did you get the song writing bug?
When I was around 13 I think. I remember a time when my brother was sick getting a tooth pulled out in surgery. We were in the waiting room and I had my discman out, headphones in, listening to Pink. I started writing lyrics in my diary that I constantly wrote in. I started writing them over Pink’s melodies. I can’t remember which album it was of hers, but I clearly knew nothing about copyright back then haha. I started with a music & vocal tutor in high school and went straight to study performing arts. I’ve have been performing as Charlie Lane ever since. How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Indie pop rock I’d say, but I’m very eclectic. I’d say fans resonate with my music more lyrically than anything else. It’s a real therapeutic release for me and I hope it is for them too. Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Amy Winehouse’s blend of rock, jazz and blues tones in her vocals but also her control.
Ian Curtas from Joy Division’s stage performances/ moves. HIs theatrics were just so inspiring and I always think about them before I go on stage.
Daniel Johnston’s songwriting. Your new single Gold Drips has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Gold Drips came about back in 2019. Written first alongside co-writer Lyra Caltabiano, who was a session guitarist at the time. I had the lyrics and melody down and then Lyra and I put together a rough take. I turned to the track in 2021 when its story had a whole new meaning to me. I really wanted to keep going with it, so I took it to fellow co-writer and producer Adam Heath and developed it into a demo along with the rest of the tracks off the album. We then found Jasmine Johnston to play some killer synths, Louis Spencely and Jet Kalt to play drums and bass, and took it to HeadGap Studios to begin recording with Rohan Sforcina. Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Yes, so ‘Gold Drips” is the first single of my upcoming Album “ I’m OK Now, But I Wasn’t” which will be released later this year. What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’m really looking forward to the release of the album toward the end of the year and doing some more live shows this year. I’ll definitely keep you informed, Amnplify. If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why? What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I would’ve just loved to write with Daniel Johnston, then have gotten Amy Winehouse to sing the song we’d written. I think writing a sad song with Johnston and performing it live with Winehouse would’ve been a dream.
Long term I want to travel the world with my music, play festivals and eventually collaborate with bigger artists on songs as well. I have a few applications to festivals underway and am planning a mini regional tour at the end of this year. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Connect with other musicians and artists, find a mentor with more experience. Also, brush up on your social media skills, you will need them in today’s industry. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
I just love making that deep connection with the audience, it’s so therapeutic. I also love entertaining people and cracking jokes on stage. It’s such a thrill for me. What’s been the career highlight so far?
Honestly, finishing this album and releasing Gold Drips. Covid took away so many years of performing and recording in the studio. I’m so grateful, happy and excited for this chapter. Finally, a few questions for some quick answers (if filmed, answer these questions in one video)

I have a few others, but this one was the most spontaneous and meaningful. Three general questions so your fans will discover a little more about you.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Probably paying $500 to get that tattoo above and then going around America with no money. Crazy/ Stupid. Bit of both. What is the one topic you can talk about for hours?
The way the brain works, psychology and mental health. What is the thing you like most about yourself?
I like that I’m pretty honest and down to earth. Follow CHARLIE LANE
