Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved music and song writing. I believe I wrote my first song around the age of 15; I was gifted a guitar for my 13th birthday and taught myself how to play it thanks to YouTube. It took me a couple years to feel confident enough to write a song but once I wrote the first one there was no looking back! How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think a safe bet would be to call my music Pop Country – it’s a little bit of both! I grew up on the Gold Coast, so I’m heavily inspired by coastal sounds and scenes, which I draw upon in production. I like to keep things ‘breezy’ and ‘easy listening’, which I think is a great way to connect with an audience. As a songwriter I really enjoy putting all of myself into each song I write. All of my lyrics are entirely true and relevant to my life, situations and lived experiences.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Growing up I was listening to artists like Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Dido and Jewel (thanks to my Mum on the drive to and from school each day!). These days, I listen to a lot of Kacey Musgraves, Hailey Whitters, The Chicks, Maisie Peters and Gretta Ray. Again, a little bit of Pop and Country!Your new EP has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
It has! ‘Side B’ is the second half of a two-part project which began with the release of ‘Side A’ in November 2022. I chose to release these songs as two EPs as I wanted to make sure I could give them all the life they deserve. This way, I was able to release a few more singles than I would have been able to as an album and tell the story in a more in-depth way. I’ve always loved vinyl records (thanks to my Mum passing down her favourites like Icehouse, Fleetwood Mac, and ABBA) and thought this was a great way to pay homage to some of the music that has inspired me to make music! These 5 songs mark the end of a 6-year chapter of my life, and to be honest, I’m really looking forward to leaving these memories in the past (but not without sharing them with you first!).What are the signature pieces on the album, and which is your favourite track?
The focus single off ‘Side B’ is my latest called ‘Hometownless’. I co-wrote this one with Jason Resch over zoom. He brought the song title to first writing session, and we toyed with the idea for a while before deciding to liken a person to a hometown in a relationship, since “home is where the heart is”. Although it’s not technically a word, Hometownless captures the feeling of going through a breakup and realising you’re left searching for a new place to call home once more. This is the second single I’ve released that was co-written with Jason; the first being Vaguer Than Vegas which was on ‘Side A’. He is an incredible lyricist and songwriter, so I feel very fortunate to have brought these ideas to life with him!Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’m launching ‘Side B’ at an EP Launch in Brisbane on Thursday August 10th at ‘It’s Still A Secret’ (that’s really the name of the venue – I’m not keeping it a secret!). Aside from that, I have a few really exciting things coming up in the next few months which I will be announcing shortly. One I’m most excited about though is a performance at the Gold Coast Music Awards on 31st August. My previous EP ‘Side A’ is nominated for ‘Release of the Year’ and the band and I have been invited to perform a song off the record on the night of nights! If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
At first my mind went to Kacey Musgraves as I am the biggest fan of her ‘Golden Hour’ record, however I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to perform with Stevie Nicks. Kacey and Stevie are incredible inspirations of mine so it would be an honour to share the stage with either of them.Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I’m really looking forward to releasing an album one day as well as putting on my own headline tour at some point. Those are two goals that seem achievable! Just gotta start working toward them! What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Hands down the most incredible career highlight for me so far would have to be performing on the official line up at CMA Fest in Nashville in June 2023. It was a dream come true to play my music in Nashville (a dream I’ve had since I was 15).FAVOURITE:
