Praise for FOLEY

“The infectious melody of their new hit “Coffee” takes listeners on a joyride of upbeat bliss, while the lyrics explore the serious struggle of feeling exhausted and struggling to do better.” Rolling Stone AU/NZ

“Foley are the kind of band that leave you feeling like you’re suspended in space. Their lush melodies and dense soundscapes are delivered with precision and charm.” Happy Magazine

“…has the makings of a quintessential pop ballad laced with glossy backdrops, and earworm melodies to match.” Earmilk

“This is the first half of their debut album, and it’s interwoven with addictively catchy, heartfelt, and electrifying pop anthems.” Unclear Magazine (Crowd Pleaser, Pt. 1)

“Foley have always focused on pure, unadulterated pop but across the five tracks …they transform their sound into an electrifying mix of 1980s-inspired synthpop and electronica.” Women In Pop

“Foley is the artist you play when you want to dance.” Indie Band Guru

For new fans especially, what is the genesis of the Foley partnership? How did you find each other and decide to make making music your objective?
We met in high school when we were both competing in a band competition – different bands, but we all hung out a lot. We were best mates for maybe four years before we even thought about making music together, but once we did it was such a no-brainer – we felt stupid! We spent about a year writing terrible pop songs, then finally started collaborating and improving, and Foley was born!

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I would call it indie pop funk – a lot of descriptors, but we have also sat a little outside mainstream pop. Our songs are very bassline and groove driven. I think the fans resonate with the joy that we put in, and the joy that comes out. We always make the process of writing as alive and energised as possible, even if it’s an emotional one – so I think that comes through in the sounds. Maybe it’s something completely different though, who knows!

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Wow – so many! Fleetwood Mac is always going to be my number one, but at the moment I am super inspired by Tove Lo. I saw her play recently and she debuted her track ‘Elevator Eyes’, it just hit you in the heart with that kick and bass synth –  it felt so saucy and dope. I love music that has that presence in a live space, so it really got me pumped for shows.

Your new album ‘Crowd Pleaser’ is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
It’s been about two years in the making, so we have really carefully curated the songs and sounds on there. At the start of the process, we had a really clear intention to push ourselves more in terms of experimenting with the production in particular, but also toplines that wouldn’t typically be in a pop song.
After making a lot of down the middle pop, we wanted to push back out to the boundaries and see what rules we could break to make the music more uniquely “us”. I am so proud of the result, because it really took us a long time to truly find our footing and we persisted until we were in the zone. Crowd Pleaser is ever evolving and it’s a record you can listen to time and time again and hear something new each time  – I hope people hear how deep we went on the detail to get it there.

What are the signature tracks, and which is your favorite to play live, and just the one you love listening to yourself?
Signature: ‘Smooth It Over’.
Live: ‘Lost in the Garden’ – the live version is just so hectic and our MD Timon Martin went crazy on it. Next level!
Listen to: Maybe ‘On The Rocks’? So tricky! If people put our music on I get so awkward and totally cringe, so honestly none of them haha.

You have some Auckland events, and Bigsound around the corner – what are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect? Any other tours or events coming up you want to inform us about?
I am really pumped to meet the other artists and connect eh – it’s always my highlight to see the other acts perform because it’s super inspiring. That connection is my favourite part of music, just getting to meet each other and learn from each other. I admire a lot of Australian creatives, so it’s going to be a lot of fangirling from me.
Tours… yes but nothing i can tell you about just yet..

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Oh my days – I guess Stevie Nicks? I think I would be too nervous, but it would be worth a crack. She completely inspired me and made me want to be an artist, so I think I would have to give it a go to harmonise with that heavenly woman (hypothetically lol).

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
Long term, we really just want to grow the audience organically and get to a point where we can tour solidly; hit the festival circuit – but not lose the real community of our audience. We are really lucky that our fans are such amazing people and genuinely look out for each other and bond. It’s unreal when we hear about friendships formed at our shows – so I want to grow in a way that doesn’t dilute that.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Just be patient. I say this to everyone so I probably sound like a broken record; the overnight success story is great, but having a career where you grow at your own pace and learn on the way is such a pleasure. You get to take on each challenge when you’re ready and not be thrown into something you aren’t set up for – so taking your time and enjoying the ride is everything.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Oh man! Just that electricity from the audience! It’s unmatched – I think about it all the time when I am not on stage, and then when I am back performing it goes way too fast!
