First up, can you please give us a quick intro?
Blending sunny melodies, exultant horns, and joyful jazzy/soul vibes, at times walking the line between Rag n Bone Man, HAIM, and even Alabama Shakes, St Louis is a breath of fresh air that showcases the talents of one of Australia’s best singer-songwriters in Alt-Country scene, moving into territories of the alt-pop scene.
Marking a sparkling peek into Ziller’s upcoming third album, All These Walls due out Friday August 25, St Louis will also be witnessed live around the country, with Ziller hitting the road extensively throughout August, September and November!

Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I can honestly say I have never had the desire to ‘be’ anything other than a musician. It did take me a while to figure out how to do that, including songwriting. Which I didn’t start doing till I was in my 20’s

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I kinda describe my Americana sound as a mix of country-style songwriting disguised in the sounds of rock, pop, and blues.
I’d like to think people resonate with my music because I write lyrics that tell the story of an emotion. I try really hard to see things from both sides or fault not completely lying with the other person. Nothing is ever black and white and I like to put that in my songs.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I listen to a lot of Foy Vance, HAIM, Bishop Briggs as well as my old school favorites like Darrell Scott,  Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, Rascal Flatts & Steve Earle … I could keep listing names!!

Your new single St.Louis has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
It had been on my heart to write St. Louis for a while, the inspiration for this song comes from a deep sense of gratitude towards the songs and the performers who influenced the music of my childhood. It included artists like Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, & Billie Holiday, but specifically, the song was inspired by the first piece I ever performed for an audience, “St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I am actually heading to the USA straight after my album launch, I was so lucky to receive the Country Music Association of Australia’s inaugural scholarship to Americana Fest. So I have done an album preview tour, with a band launch at George Lane in St Kilda on the 26th of August. Then I’m in Nashville for a month!
After that my sister is having a baby so I’m off till November, where I’ll be heading north for a run of shows!

How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
Man COVID has really been the gift that keeps on giving to the music industry, it’s ramifications are still being felt by so many. I do think the one good thing that has come from it for me personally is that I have learned to balance my priorities better and cut out the stuff that doesn’t really matter to me!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Ooh … it’d be absolutely amazing to even be in the same room as Dolly Parton … what an amazing woman!

.

.

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
Yes! I want to tour overseas, I want to write more and write for other artists, I want to collaborate more and keep doing what I’m doing!

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
The absolute best thing is being able to connect with people at a show, that’s what music is all about, creating connections.
My career highlight will definitely have to be supporting Ian Moss & Troy Cassar-Daley. It was such an honor to support these 2 masters of their crafts! And they’re such nice people so that made it wonderful!
