How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
I have always written stripped back acoustic music & music with a fuller sound designed for a rock band. The Black Tide is now two years old and takes care of the songs that need that bigger band sound. Pat (Guitar) was in another band with me and came over to The Black Tide. Jono & Joel (drums & bass) were chosen to audition, killed it and have been with us ever since. I manage, book and co-ordinate the band at present but all band members have heaps of industry experience and are all actively involved in most decisions. We are very lucky to have such a brains trust within the band which covers booking, recording, sound, music theory & arrangement and years of touring.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
We are in the space of rock, blues, country and at times hard rock which gives us more than enough sonic inspiration and options when writing songs. I think people resonate with the passion, energy and the stories we tell. I always try to be 100% authentic and I like to think that shines through in song and stage.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
A couple of us saw Charley Crockett the other day and man that was something. The whole experience of sound, performance, musicianship and stage presence was there in spaces. I left that room wanting to get to the level he’s currently at, really a night that will stick with me forever.

Your new single ‘Hot Blood’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Hot Blood was originally recorded in the church (side A) of the new album Divided Mind. It was a hit in the striped back mode which prompted me to throw it at the band at rehearsal and it just fell into place. Most of the time I will write songs to be either solo or band songs and this one worked equally well on both so it had to be released. Lyrically is a jam about being a very passionate individual who goes all in for whatever I am chasing. It’d got some serious outlaw blues/rock vibes going on.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We are just coming to the end of the Hot Blood single tour now with shows in Tumbafest, Canberra & Sydney. We will be back writing music for a while then back at it in the coming months. There will be another new single just around the corner.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Jimi Hendrix & Chris Cornell. To feel that kinda power on stage is something that I would love to experience.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
We just want to keep raising the bar on our songwriting, performances and ride where that takes us. Playing to rocking festival crowds is one of the best feelings so chasing that. We also have plans to get overseas and tour as much as possible.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Write as much as you can, get it right before you release it, always know what is coming next, build a team and be prepared for rejection and to keep on knocking on that door.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
It’s amazing to see people reacting to the music you have worked really hard on. We have been lucky to have played festivals to crowds over 5k and sweaty clubs  to 50 so it’s hard to pick the best ones. So far we would say Wanderer Festival & The Divided Mind tour were the best.
