Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the song writing bug?
I have wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. My early years of childhood were spent dancing, singing and acting on Saturdays and every other week night. When I entered my teenage years I felt like I had so many things to process so my songwriting bug started at around 13/14 years of age.

Briefly describe the journey so far.
My journey through the music industry has been full of ups and downs as I’m sure most artists would agree. There have definitely been periods where I stopped music altogether. It got overwhelming or it was taking up more capacity than I could give and to be honest the not knowing of who I was and what kind of artist I wanted to be really made the process frustrating at times. Having said that, the last couple of years have been incredibly rewarding so I wouldn’t change it for the world.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I would describe my sound as emotional pop haha! I like to think people resonate with my music because I tend to write about things that have happened to me or my perspective on life events and the changes we go through. I try to word it in a way that someone could also feel like they have experienced something similar or like I wrote the song for them. As for my sound, I want to tug on those heartstrings! I want to make people really feel something (layering pads, guitars, strings etc) but also keeping elements of pop (catchy hooks, pop song structure, consistent beat). I just want to move and dance to the music I write and that’s what I want my audience to do too.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
At the moment I’m diving deep into an artist by the name of Griff. Her live shows are full of energy. She has soft, intimate moments that also build to big pop anthems. She has wicked lighting and costuming and I feel she has nailed the emotional pop era.
I also am in love with Olivia Dean. She is just all smiles and class. I’ve been a massive fan of hers for ages.

Your latest single ‘13’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
My single ‘13’ has had many versions (pretty standard with me and my writing) but when I first wrote it years ago it was on a ukulele with five verses. I had so much to say to this person at the time and I was grateful for having them when I was struggling in Melbourne. When I came back to Perth I made sure I was only doing things that made me happy. I had forgotten what it felt like to do simple things like go for a sunset swim and how alive and young you can feel just by doing these simple things. I wanted to capture that feeling of when you’re 13 years old with no worries in the world hanging out with your crush and you’ve got butterflies in your tummy. That’s how I felt when I was with this person and I loved that I could have those feelings even in my 20’s.
The final version came from one session with an amazing songwriter/producer, Reece Lenzo. He just got the brief, understood the concept and nailed the delivery. I wanted to write a feel-good pop track and I think we did exactly that.

Is there an EP or ALBUM on the drawing board?
I would love to write an album and have it curated from start to finish. That is definitely on the drawing board but a little while away. At the moment I am just focusing on singles and honing my sound.

What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’m so excited, I’m actually going on my first south regional tour to celebrate my single ‘13’ in May! The tour will be a mix of band shows and intimate duo shows.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I would love to perform with Olivia Dean because I think we would just have so much fun on stage plus she has a full brass band when she sings live. There is something so special about singing with so many people on stage. You really feel it deep in your bones.
Plus I know all of her songs and there is not one song hers I don’t like.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I would love to combine my dancing with my singing. I experience so much joy when I do both so I want to create an experience where people come to my shows and share the joy with me. I’m changing the way I write music and I’m doing dance classes again so I can do exactly this. I would love to be touring the world and collaborating with people as well. I think art is always so much better when it’s shared. It keeps you vulnerable, grounded and open to new opportunities.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Take your time. Making music that you actually like is way more important and enjoyable. If you can find good people to surround yourself with, hold onto them.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
The best part about performing live is knowing that I have someone’s attention for however long and having the privilege of making them feel seen. I want them to just have a good time, even laugh at me if that’s what helps them be somewhere else for a while. I love making eye contact with people because for just a moment we connected and that means so much to me.
