Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the songwriting bug?
To be truthful all I ever wanted to be was a lead singer of a band and I was for many years starting my first band in high school. Then during a time when a band line up had ended, I was offered some money to do a solo record, so although very scared to go solo, I jumped in the deep end and the rest is history.
I grew up in a musical family, my Grandfather was in musical theatre and my Mum was also a singer so entertainment was in the blood, I just wanted to be an Entertainer and tour OZ. The song writing came from necessity because I didn’t want to just do covers, I had something to say. I always write with other people never alone because I find for me they just add so much to my crazy ideas, if I add in talented writers they take me higher. How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I am Country Rock but my last Album WANTED I mixed it with an old Spaghetti Western movie sound track. So for now… I am a little Country, a little Western & a whole lot of Rock! I grew up on Country but fell in love with Rock as a teenager and it wasn’t till I starting writing ….& I what I thought sounded Rock…everyone said no… that’s more Country and so my sound was created. I feel people resonate with my music because I was inspired by the Aussie Pub Rock sound and threw it in the mix with a truck load of Country.Musically, inspires you today?
I guess diving back into Country Music history like I did for the WANTED album, I had to immerse myself into the epic soundtracks of old Western movies. It was so much fun and we have done it again for my New Album MOONSHINE. This time, we dived into sounds of the Prohibition era and the music that was around in that time in the hills of Virginia when Moonshiners ran wild.
So right now that’s what’s inspiring me. Country music has such a rich history of sounds and instruments and I have enjoyed learning more about it for these two records.Your new album ‘Moonshine’ will soon be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I guess I have answered that a little in the past few questions, but to add to that, during covid I decided I was sick of ticking all the boxes and thought lets throw the rule books away and make music for art sake & make an Album that we absolutely love if no one was to ever hear it. And so my producers Brian White and Brian Bunn set off on our musical discovery. We were blown away when the fans and industry loved it so much it landed me a Golden Guitar nomination for Contemporary Album of the Year. So with ‘Moonshine’ we knew we wanted to create chapter 2 of the Music Era Albums and so we went back into the engine room to bring another new sound with tales of rebellion, heartbreak and wild living. You had the opportunity to work with US country music artist Colt Ford on your 2023 single ‘Moonshine’. How did that originate and what was that experience like?
That was truly a huge dream come true. My management asked me to write a list of 5 Artists I would love to collaborate with & said… think Big. Colt was one of the 5 I wrote down but I didn’t think it would ever happen so you can imagine the reaction, when I was told the news he loved my music and the song. I then travelled to Nashville to meet him and we shot the music video and he did not disappoint. He was so kind and fun and I learned a lot from him on set working with such a legend. He loves Aussies and Australia so we have been talking about doing some shows together so you just never know. What are the signature tracks, and which are your favourites to play live?
I would have to say ‘Addicted to the Diesel’ and ‘Wanted’. My career took off 18 years ago because I wrote a song about a girl that drove a truck. The industry went bananas that there was a girl who was cheering them on singing songs about truck drivers especially the woman. So on my first 4 albums, I would add a few truckin’ songs. With “Addicted to the Diesel” I cannot explain it but as soon as we start that song the crowd goes nuts and people sing along even when they have never heard it, so that’s very special. And it’s the same with WANTED and funny enough both songs were co written with Matt Scullion as the common denominator he is a brilliant writer & just gets me and what my voice can do. Your ‘Risk It All’ tour is coming up in May? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
This is by far the best part of my job. I looooove to create a SHOW! I added video backdrops & costumes for the WANTED tour, so you can imagine we are taking it up another notch for the MOONSHINE – Risk it all Tour. But fans won’t see it coming because I always have something new to pull out of the bag. So If anyone wants to see a Country Rock show with a twist this one’s for you. We sure do have fun. If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I would have to say George Strait, my Dad was a huge fan and I grew up listening to all his Albums. My Dad sadly passed away a few years ago and so on this Album I have covered one of his songs POISON in Memory of my Dad. This song was the perfect story to fit the Album brief and who knows maybe one day George will get to hear my version. That would be cool. What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
For me it’s all about the one. That one new fan who really digs my music and comes along with me for the ride. If I can continue to grow that all over the world, I would be very happy and thanks to digital that is starting to happen more and more. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Be true to yourself, find out what is unique about you and your sound, and embrace it. I have always been a bit different and never fitted in any box, so it took a while for the industry to embrace what I do, but while they were trying to figure it out, I got busy building a career and have performed at the biggest festivals, truck shows, ute shows here in Australia and have toured throughout the USA as well. So, find your lane, go hard and they will eventually catch up. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Seeing people sing your songs, is the biggest buzz ever. And career highlight I would have to say headlining the Tamworth Country Music Festival main stage this year to over 3,000 people and finding out the VIP section sold out before the day. It was an 18-year dream come true. It was a wild night, people can check out some of the footage on my latest socials as we are using it to promo the Tour. Here are three personal questions to let your fans discover more about you:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Opened a fashion gifts and homewares store with my sister during covid. It was a huge success but who is that crazy to attempt it. ME What is the one topic you can talk about for hours?
Aussie Rock bands & music from the past here in Australia it shaped my life as a kid. What is the thing you like most about yourself?
Well it is not my toes lol. I am a very loyal person, it gets me in trouble some times when others are not the same way, but I have friendships that have lasted decades because of it. Not sure if they all want to stay friends with me lol but hey I just keep in touch and never go away & those friendships have rolled through all of lifes ups and downs & I am grateful I made the effort.
