Interview with Dave Bruce
Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the songwriting bug?
I have always wanted to be a singer, although originally I wanted to be more in the musical theater world. I think the first time I got the songwriting bug was at 10. I’d written a lot of songs for musicals I’d created, but I’d say around 10 I started writing outside of the musical theatre genre, and I loved it!
Interestingly, you have moved from the United Kingdom to Los Angeles. Briefly describe that journey and change, and your experiences since the move.
I moved when I was 14, and looking back I’m not sure if I’d recommend it! I moved to pursue music and left the countryside to go to the big city. I think it was a necessary move to develop as an artist, but truthfully it was also very lonely! I didn’t have anyone my own age around and I definitely missed out on some parts of just being a kid!How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I like to describe it as whimsical pop. I hope fans resonate because I always try to prioritize storytelling. Lyrics have always been my favorite part of a song. Words of affirmation are also definitely my main love language, so I love connecting to people through that.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I’ve had many influences growing up, but currently, I was blown away by Reneé Rapp’s performance of Snow Angel on SNL. Her live vocals are absolutely mind-blowing, and I had chills the entire time.Your latest single ‘In Your Car’ has just been released! How does it compare to your past singles?
It’s very different to my past singles. I’ve never released love songs before, in fact, most of my songs tend to be quite melancholic, at least lyrically, so this is very new for me! I’m especially proud of this sound because I wasn’t trying to be or sound like anything, just a girl in love!Your new EP ’Wonderlust: The Dawn’ is about to be released in May. Describe its origin and evolution.
Wonderlust happened very organically. Transparently, I just could not stop writing love songs! I had so many, and so fast! Originally I had considered not releasing it and giving the EP privately to my partner on our anniversary. Then I decided that I was so proud of the songs, I wanted to share them with my fans! As for the name, I called it Wonderlust because I just could not think of a word to describe how I felt that seemed strong enough! I kept googling words for love and infatuation, and nothing seemed to fit. So, I made my own word for it!What are the signature tracks, and which are your favorites to play live?
Sunlight definitely started it all, so that song means a lot to me. Technicolor Honeymoon is probably the signature track, which I can’t wait to show everyone. As for my favorite to play live, I love this track called Incandescent. It has these big soaring vocals on the chorus that I just love to sing. What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’m hoping to have a showcase for the EP soon, and I definitely want to get back out on the road! I miss meeting everyone so I can’t wait to do that again. Fans can expect a lot more music, and soon!If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I would have to say, Freddie Mercury, just because he’s been my idol since I was a little girl. I was just watching his Live Aid performance the other night and legitimately crying. He is such an incredible performer. He’d absolutely outshine me, but that’s fine by me!What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I want to keep growing and getting my music out there. I’d love to do an album one day, I’d love my own show one day! I think I’m progressing towards them by conquering my fears and anxieties step by step and just putting myself out there more, and I’m very fortunate to have a wonderful team that supports me.With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Do it for you! I can’t stress that enough. A few years ago I got a bit lost in trying to write and sound how others wanted, rather than thinking about what music made me happy. And I lost myself a bit! Art should be fun, first and foremost. Every job has stressors, and ups and downs, but if you make music for yourself, you will always be fulfilled. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Definitely going on tour for the first time. Seeing the audience’s reactions to the set we built out was incredible. As silly as it may sound, I wasn’t expecting people to like it! Seeing that they did was amazing. I got thrown friendship bracelets which I still have to this day, and seeing people sing along to my songs was something I will never forget. Finally, just a few questions for some quick answers –
