Have you always wanted to be an artist?
I think when I learned about what being an artist was, I was kind of scared of it because you need to have a point of view to be an artist. I just didn’t think I was like that good. When I was 12 or 11, my parents bought me Human Nature’s first album. I listened to it nonstop and I rinsed it for a couple weeks and then I went to them and I was like, I want another album. They were like, tough sh*t, you can’t have another album. And I was like, well, f*ck you, I’m gonna write my own then. So I started songwriting out of spite and it felt good. I don’t know, I brought it into my life.

How do you find creative inspiration in your songwriting process?
I went to the US to study and I fell in love with songwriting. I was like, I think I’m good being a songwriter. I started writing for other people and I would go to these publishers in LA and they’d be like, can you play these with artists? You’re an artist, be an artist. I feel like I stumbled into it because of TikTok and all that.

How has your journey changed since your song, ‘This City,’ has been released? It blew up on TikTok and people have used your song as an audition on The Voice.
Yeah. It was so f*cking mad. You know, I didn’t have TikTok downloaded when ‘This City’ went viral on it. I was told about it in an Instagram message. So that was my introduction to TikTok. I think TikTok has been a great catalyst for new art to get out there, but I also think it’s damaged the music releasing process because now it feels like it just goes into a vacuum and then if it doesn’t get a million pre-sales before it’s out then like you’re f*cked but I was very happy to benefit from it.

Why do you think your fans resonated with your music? How would you describe your sound?
What I’ve learned through putting out music is that nothing I feel is unique. Anytime I feel alone, I’m not. I always say a good song is being able to take a common concept and say it in a way that no one else has said it before. Ed Sheeran is the greatest songwriter on the planet when it comes to love songs, because every song he puts out is about love. He manages to find a new way to say it. He’s had hit after hit after hit. I think it’s like magic. I don’t really understand it. I’m really lucky to be doing what I’m doing. Whenever I put out the songs, fans redefine what the songs mean. Even for me, ‘This City; came from a really dark place and people kind of turned it into like a love song and I didn’t see that coming. So, I’m grateful that I’m in the position I’m in. I’m happy that anyone listens to my music.

Guy Sebastian is a great collaboration, and you’ve called him one of your heroes. Could you explain the origin and evolution of your latest single ‘Antidote’ and how was that experience?
Guy, I feel like was everyone’s hero. He’s the most incredible singer I’ve ever worked with. Everyone watched the first season of Australian Idol. When ‘This City,’came out, which was a year and a half before it blew up, he listened to it and he added it to his playlist. I woke up and he had followed me in the middle of the night. I was like, oh, f*ck, Guy Sebastian’s just followed me. I wanted to play it cool, but I didn’t at all. He messaged me and was like, yo, legend, when you’re in Sydney, come over, let’s write.
We wrote ‘Antidote’ and then it sat in our text messages for six months, we didn’t do anything with it and then both of us were like, hey bro I think we’ve got something pretty special here. Then Guy produced it and we wrote the bridge nine months after writing it. It came out and people seemed to like it and it’s just been really good.

What is your performance pre-ritual?
My pre-ritual has been pretty loose, I gotta say. My guitarist is like my brother and we’ve played together for 14 years and he keeps me very level-headed, so it’s been shots of Jameson in the green room before we go on. I like to eat before a show, I love a Vietnamese meal or hot chips is good.

Your tour dates are in May. What are you looking forward to?
Just been home playing in Australia. I playing venues I haven’t played, but I grew up in Sydney and Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney. I’ve been to so many shows there. I lived over the road for about 18 months. It’s a great place. It’s such a special venue. It’s I’m so excited to play there. It just being in Australia, just I don’t know, I feel like myself, I feel I can just relax a little bit. Australian crowds are just incredible.

What other big events have you got coming up?
I’m on tour now from May until like October so that is going to consume my world. Hopefully, you know, hopefully Guy and I snag a cheeky Arias nomination for ‘Antidote.’ I’m also moving to London, which is exciting, but I’m going to be home in Australia a lot this year, which is great.

If you could perform with any music artist alive or dead, who would you choose?
Ed Sheeran has always been just like my number one. I would love to write with him. That would be pretty sick.

What piece of advice would you give to any artist starting out?
Get a great lawyer. Don’t expect it to all happen at once and make sure that you love doing what you’re doing every single day.
