Soulful, R&B/Pop, Australian singer/songwriter, and guitarist Natasha Ami Palmer, known to her fans simply as “Tash” has been wowing the world with her silken vocal delivery, emotionally personal lyrics, and youthful beauty. Discovered by American Producer/Songwriter Mark J. Feist in 2016, Tash has released 56 singles and 25 music videos totaling well over 60 million collective streams across all platforms to date.

Her newest R&B and dream pop song “Dopamine” reminds listeners of artists like H.E.R. meets Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo with her sweet vocals and chill beat. A sister song to her previous single “Serotonin,” “Dopamine” is about being in love or infatuated with someone and you can sense that they feel the same way. A lot of the lyrics came from that amazing feeling you get when love is reciprocated.

“’Dopamine’ was written very quickly,” Tash shares. “My producer Mark Feist came up with a groove and I was instantly inspired to write chords and a top line to go with it. We recorded and came up with the background arrangements the following day and were done with it after a couple of hours in the studio.”

Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I knew I wanted to sing and perform when I was about 9/10 years old. I loved dancing around my room to CDs and singing along to them. I started writing when I was 13, shortly after I picked up the guitar. I have a very musical family, so I naturally gravitated toward music at a young age. My mum in particular enjoys songwriting herself, and watching her do that definitely sparked me to try it too.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
The best way to describe my vocal and songwriting style is Billie Eilish meets H.E.R. It’s generally a mix of RnB and pop. I think fans enjoy the music because the chords and arrangements are so soulful, and lyrically I try to be as authentic to myself as possible.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
My favourite artist to watch is Ariana Grande. Her delivery and vocal control is unbelievable, as well as her stage presence and movement. I would love to deliver a show at that kind of calibre.

Your new single ‘Dopamine’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
The title Dopamine was inspired by another song I had written prior, titled “Serotonin”. I thought it would be cool to keep that theme going. The lyrics talk the excitement of falling for someone and knowing that they feel the same way without them having to express it. To get the writing process started, my producer Mark Feist comes up with a groove and records it there and then. Whilst he’s laying down the drum part, I start fooling around on the guitar, thinking about chord progressions. We then record a demo guitar part for me to write to, and then I go on to piece the vocal melody and lyric together. It’s always a very fun and relaxed vibe in the studio, and we work very efficiently together. On a good day, that process takes us about an hour. If it’s taking hours and hours to come up with things then I know the end result isn’t going to be my best work. If it comes out naturally without having to overthink, then I know we’re onto something good.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
At the moment the focus is on putting out singles at a consistent pace as the demand for new content is at an all time high. However, my ultimate goal would be to release a body of work with a well-thought out concept and visuals to match.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I don’t have anything set in stone at the moment. I just did a private show for TikTok in Sydney which was lot of fun. I’m mainly looking forward to getting back in the studio and writing a new batch of songs. The fans can expect a consistent stream of new music from me that’s for sure!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I would love to perform with Thundercat. He is such an incredible bass player to watch live, and really enjoy listening to his music. Any kind of collaboration with him, whether it be live or in the studio would be a dream.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I would love to release many albums and have the opportunity to collaborate with artists I really admire, such as Kaytranada, Billie Eilish, Thundercat, Steve Lacy etc. Ultimately I just want my music to be discovered and be able to share that experience with fans. Social media (in particular TikTok) has become the main vessel for artists to launch themselves and draw more people to their music. At this stage, I’m using that platform as much as I can to promote my new music as well as my existing catalogue, which has over 50 songs.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Although I wish social media wasn’t as crucial as it is, my advice to new artists is to embrace it as best you can, and create content that is authentic to you, not based on what’s trending.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
The best part about performing for me is being able to feed off of the energy from the audience, and enjoy the music with them. I also love how everything sounds with a live band – there is certainly a different energy to the music with live musicians.
