The Coronas

First up, can you please give us a quick intro to The Coronas the band?
The Coronas are Graham Knox on bass, Conor Egan on drums, and myself, Danny O’Reilly, on guitar and vocals.

How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
We’ve been playing together since we were in school. Myself and Knoxy (bass) have known each other since we were toddlers as our parents are friends. Myself and Conor were in primary school together. We have a great balance of delegating band work along with our manager Jim. A few years ago we set up our own record label so that has increased the work load, but in a really cool and interesting way. Since we’ve set up the label we’ve had 3 releases and have been lucky enough to secure 3 number one albums! We joke that we’re the most successful record label ever, 100% record! We’re very much a democracy when it comes to making decisions. I would be the main driving force when it comes to the song writing, Knoxy looks after all our socials, website and merch, and Conor takes charge of our stage show. It’s a good balance.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think we’re indie pop/rock, whatever that means these days. We try to write good songs that have chorus’s and sing-along vibes. We hope our live show comes across as energetic and immersive. I always say our really special gigs are made by the crowd and how much they’re into it. But the best way to explain our sound is by listening to our most recent album ‘Time Stopped’.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Loads and loads. For me personally I’d say The National, Gang of Youths, Coldplay. I saw Coldplay this summer in Barcelona and their show blew my mind. The sound, the production, the energy, and obviously they have the back catalogue. Every show I go to I try to learn and take something that possibly might work in our little shows. As a band, we love The Beatles, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, Bowie, Talking Heads, all the greats!

Your new single One Last Time has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
This song is an unreleased track that we recorded in 2009, taken from our Tony Was An Ex-Con album sessions. When we decided to put together this special collection of our early stuff, we found this song and thought it would be a cool addition to it. It’s very stripped back, acoustic guitar and vocal and it has a cool string section.

And you’re set to tour Aus next month! What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We’re buzzing to be heading back to Aus. We had our best ever shows there last year and to be playing venues such as the Enmore theatre is just a dream. It’s cool we have a couple of days off this trip too, so we can enjoy ourselves in between shows. The fans can expect energetic, sing-along good vibes only! And probably a fair few Irish people in the crowd with them!

How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
Well apart from having the most unfortunate band name in the world, Covid affected us like every other band. It was a difficult couple of years. But we’re lucky in that we’ve picked up where we left off, and thankfully things are going really well for us, especially back in Ireland where we’re blessed to continue to sell a lot of tickets.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Prince would be cool. He was so ridiculously talented, and such an interesting character. I’d love to just chat to Paul McCartney about all his songs and the buzz of Beatlemania. And I’d love to open for my favourite Aussie band Gang of Youths, could you ask Dave Le’Aupepe for me?

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
We’ve been together as a band for almost 15 years and the longer we get to do it, the luckier we feel to be able to do it. Our aspiration is to continue to be able to tour, be creative, write songs, and play live for as long as we can. We’re enjoying it more and more as we get deeper into our 30s.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Hearing them sing your songs back to you is a special feeling. Playing a new song that gets a great reaction is pretty cool too. We’ve been lucky enough to have had more than a few highlights over the years. Just this summer we had a huge headline show in Dublin that was sold out – 8,000 people in a huge tent in Fairview Park singing your songs back to you is something that we are blessed to have experienced.

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
FAVOURITE:
Album – Rumours Fleetwood Mac
Artist – The National
Movie – The Dark Knight
Place to visit – Dingle, County Kerry
Venue to play – The Olympia Theatre Dublin
Food – Knoxy our bass player’s home cooking
Drink – Guinness
Person in History – Sinead O Connor
Tattoo – me and Knoxy have a few. His are cooler than mine. I’ve got some Irish that translates as “a reason for everything” which I’m not sure I even believe but the Irish looked cool!
