Nothing But Thieves

“From the bold Welcome to the DCC start, the Pop The Balloon full stop at the end of the original release felt like more of a comma with more story to tell. They complete it here…The five tracks are welcome additions to Dead Club City and offer clarity to the album’s overall concept.” – Silver Tiger Media

“…the additions of the three previously unreleased tracks and the two stripped-down songs add great exclusivity to the album…through their alternative sound, crafted to be the band’s bread and butter, Dead Club City Deluxe is a fantastic mix of alternative rock music that can only propel the band to greater heights.” – All Music Magazine

“Dead Club City Deluxe is a collector’s item and the original record itself is a very worthwhile experience…these ‘Thieves have unquestionably stolen hearts and immeasurable love ‘Particles’ throughout the world and we potentially have a significant part of the soundtrack selected for the doomsday party.” – Wall Of Sound

Nothing But Thieves

.

British rock band extraordinaire, Nothing But Thieves, have decided to treat their fans to a re-release of their most recent album ‘Dead Club City’ as a Deluxe edition releasing on the 15th of March, featuring three brand new songs and two never-before-heard stripped versions of existing songs. This new and improved album includes their most recent single ‘Oh No He :: Said What?’ released in January of this year. Dead Club City Deluxe transports you to a dark European club, bathed in neon lights where it’s customary to lose yourself in the beat and sweet musings of lead singer Conor Mason.

‘Welcome to the DCC’ is the perfect introductory song for this album, setting the scene for the story that is told through each song of the album of a dystopian members-only club (Dead Club City) that showcase themes of real-world problems through the lyrics of each track. The upbeat dance tune invites you in and makes you feel good with it’s catchy hook and captivating guitar rhythms. ‘Overcome’ follows in the narrative, pushing through the pain of the present in hopes of a better future. The song begins on a sombre note and slowly transitions into uplifting instrumentals and choral vocals as lyrics begin to communicate the message of hope. Featuring an Aerosmith-style guitar solo by guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown, this song uplifts your spirits in a world where the future may not seem promising.

‘Tomorrow is Closed’ sees the world through a pessimistic worldview with a touch of desperation to hold on to what little hope is left. The dynamic highs and lows of the song further reiterate the messages behind each phrase, most notable in the choruses that communicate hope with the lyrics “No, I don’t think it’s for nothin.’ But I hope someday we’re gonna get it back” which is where the vocals are the most prominent and emotive. This could be interpreted as a take on how the world itself has shifted and changed into something much darker than it used to be. As all hope is lost, the protagonist begins to surrender his emotion becoming robotic which is emphasised by the vocal effects throughout the song ‘Keeping You Around.’ The slow, melancholy background melody sways slowly as the lyrics act as a drunken man’s confession.

Similarly, ‘City Haunts’ depicts the protagonist hitting their breaking point with only small moments of happiness that come from their vices keeping them hooked like a siren song to the Dead Club City. “Can you do that thing to me? Sweet song you sing to me.” The song oozes Prince and the funkiness and falsetto that he’s so well known for. It’s reminiscent of a dark club bathed in neon where you’d go to lose yourself and find a moment away from the harsh reality of life outside the venue walls. ‘Do You Love Me Yet?’ and ‘Members Only’ brings the narrative to the perspective of the protagonist desperate to get into the members only club that is the DCC, mimicking the advantage of privilege in the real world and how it grants you opportunities that others don’t experience. ‘Do You Love Me Yet?’ targets the narcissism that oozes from those with privilege comparing it to a god complex with “Negotiate with the universe to gain some extra privilege And make your god in my image.”

‘Green Eyes :: Siena’ slows the pace down, reminiscing on the warm memories shared between the protagonist and love interest that is making the Dead Club City a little easier to exist in. The track is sweet with just a hint of desolation, paralleling the story told within the lyrics. ‘Foreign Language’ picks the pace back up, telling a story of the protagonist and the love interest and how the relationship between them is developing and their realising different things about each other that they may not fully understand hinted at in the chorus’ lyrics “Well, it’s a foreign language to me, baby But I love hearing you talk.” The song is fun and optimistic with the addition of a bright synth in the background that adds a lightness to the track and hints at the hope coming back into the story.

‘Talking to Myself’ perfectly utilises echo and excess reverb to communicate the loneliness of the protagonist after the dissolution of their relationship with the ‘love interest.’ Starting off acapella, the song perfectly conveys the image of the protagonist just wandering through empty streets of the DCC in his own thoughts to the laid back beat that carries through the song. The instrumental is muffled like how the sounds of the world get dampened and silenced when you’re lost in thought. With nothing keeping him attached to the Dead Club City, ‘Pop the Balloon’ twists the mood into an unhinged and chaotic one. With the illusion being destroyed and the relisation of the DCC’s toxicity, the protagonist is hellbent on destroying it. Where ‘Talking to Myself’ was muffled and laid back, ‘Pop the Balloon’ flips the script giving you harsh, growling guitar and grungy anarchy at the horrid state of the world around you.

Now onto the ‘Deluxe’ part of this album, Nothing but Thieves gives their fans three new additions to the album and the storyline of Dead Club City: ‘Oh No He :: Said What?’, ‘Time :: Fate :: Karma :: God’, and ‘Pure You.’ ‘Oh No He :: Said What?,’ released also as a single at the end of January 2024, brings you futuristic and modern disco, paying homage to the vibes of ‘City Haunts.’ This song sounds like it was created to honour 80’s pop created by the legends like Prince and Michael Jackson, combining their flawless falsetto, funky beats and catchy hooks all in one song. If this was following the narrative of DCC, it’d be a commentary of the future and the digital age we live in, how everything is documented and how it’s easy to be an “online sensation”.

There ain’t no prizes for the kindest heart

But I’ll make you rich if you subscribe

Well, someone just blew up the bar

‘Cause they were swallowin’ the lie, oh, oh

‘Time :: Fate :: Karma :: God’ revives the classic 80’s synth riff but breathes new life into it with a modern rock twist. The song is sultry with heavy rock and roll undertones, oozing passion and energy that’ll have anyone up and dancing on their feet, but that’s what Nothing But Thieves have mastered the art of. ‘Pure You’ mellows out the album with pure love and softness as it starts, then teases us with gradual builds of the instrumental as if the protagonist’s emotions are just overcoming him and wrapping him in a positive, pure love. This song perfectly sets up the vibes for the last two songs on the album, stripped back versions of ‘Overcome’ and ‘Tomorrow is Closed.’

Like an encore on an album, the two alternate versions of ‘Overcome’ and ‘Tomorrow is Closed’ create a gorgeous, intimate take on the songs, allowing the vocals and most importantly the lyrics, to shine through and really deliver their messages. It showcases a delicate vulnerability and softness in the band, Nothing But Thieves, and their music that gives the listener a glimpse into their thought process and emotions behind these two songs.

Nothing But Thieves have an incredible storytelling ability within their music that is only heightened by their undeniable talents. Dead Club City as an album was a delicious banana split full of different flavours and textures but their additional songs added to the Deluxe version are the sprinkles and cherry on top of a beautifully curated album. I’d definitely recommend checking out Dead Club City Deluxe when it drops on 15th March!
