Currently in Australia for the Good Things Festival & a selection of Side Shows, the mighty Sepultura played Brisbane’s Princess Theatre to an enthusiastic crowd of Metal Heads. We were there to check out the action.

Arriving late to opening band Deprivation’s short, half hour set, we were greeted to a scene of energy in the room. The five piece from Canberra were well & truly belting out their blend of Groove Metal to an appreciative crowd. The songs we saw performed certainly hit the spot.

Up next were the power trio from Adelaide, Hidden Intent, playing some fine Aussie Thrash Metal. With Chris McEwan on Bass / Vocals, Phil Bennett on Lead Guitar & Paul Lewis on Drums, Hidden Intent hark back to the glory days of 80’s Thrash Metal. True, they certainly put their own modern flavour & personality into the mix, but I suspect their musical upbringing was intrenched in the golden era of Thrash. Hell, they even throw a Slayer cover into the set. Brilliant! Stand out tracks for me were Drop Bears Are Real & A Place Of Horror. Great Set.

With the crowd now sufficiently warmed up, it was time for headliner, Sepultura. Well known for their standout Live Shows, Sepultura are now into their third decade as a band. With early nineties masterpiece album’s Arise, Chaos A.D & Roots in their catalogue, Sepultura have maintained a huge following worldwide. I’m sure there was a large ex-pat South American contingent in the crowd to witness the power & energy the boys from Brazil were about to offer up.

Of course, this modern version of Sepultura have been a unified unit now for many years. Led by the legend Andreas Kisser on guitar, Paulo Jr on bass, the American tour de force Derrick Green on vocals & Eloy Casagrande behind the drum kit, Sepultura tonight were playing a selection of tracks off their most recent album, Quadra, released in 2020, plus some tasty classic tunes thrown into the set as well. Taking to the stage the boys launch into a blistering version of Isolation, followed up by the classic Territory from the album Chaos A.D, then into a ripping Means to An End. Derrick Green is an imposing figure onstage & his vocals are on point. I love watching Andreas Kisser play guitar. The guy just shreds. His tone rips your face off. Tonight was no exception. Next up, Attitude off the Roots album. Does it get any better than that? It would appear that, yes, is the answer, as the band tear into Kairos & then a stonking version of Propaganda. By now the Princess Theatre is pumping. The energy in the room is palpable.

We get, amongst others, Ali from Quadra, Agony, Refuse Resist, Arise, Ratamahatta & set closer Roots Bloody Roots. In just on 90 minutes, Sepultura prove to all in attendance, that they are the real deal. They bring it. For sure.
