Shake It is back at Adelaide Fringe and MC Minnie Andrews is in amazing form as she compares and co-ordinates an hour of non-stop entertainment bringing a mixture of song, burlesque, circus and more.  Up front we are encouraged to take video and photos and share them to social media. I’d suggest you get yourself a good seat because there is lots of memories you are going to want to record.

I first got to see Minnie as the potty mouth but innocent looking songstress in the show Papillon which featured other Australian circus luminaries such as Idris Staton and Elena Kirschbaum. Since then, she has gone on the produce and star in the ever-changing Shake It.  I say ever changing because no two are ever going to be entirely alike and the line up that I saw isn’t likely to be the one that you will get.

Essentially Minnie is an MC powerhouse with the cutesy toddler-esque outfits and wigs that make her look like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth except that what comes out of her mouth is an alternating mixture of incredible powerhouse vocals and hilariously foul-mouthed smut and innuendo.  She has to be seen to be believed.

In between Minnie there is an hour of amazingly talented performers who treat the audience to a small part of their own shows.  We had burlesque, strong man acrobatics and aerial contortions, fire dancing and swallowing and side show bed of nails on a suspended swinging platform.  So much talent and so much variety.  As I understand it ever few days one or other of the acts will rotate out of the line and a new act will take their place.  I was so glad that we had the incredible Kraken Fire at our show.  Regardless of the line up on the night for me the absolute treat is to hear Minnie’s voice in all its splendour, the version of Radiohead’s Creep was worth the price of admission alone.

Shake It plays nightly Thursday through Sunday until the end of the Fringe on March 16th.  Go and see it – you won’t regret it!

About SHAKE IT

‘Shake It’ features the best of burlesque at the Adelaide Fringe, combined with foul mouthed songstress Minnie Andrews (from ‘Papillon’). Minnie hosts one of the most outrageous events at Fringe, with special guest acts from across the festival of burlesque, circus and cabaret. This will not be polite, this will not be gentle, we are SHAKING IT UP!
