Concluding their “Call My Name” tour’s final leg at The Northcote Social Club in Melbourne, was Sydney’s own Yours Truly. Joining them on stage were notable artists: Tasmanian songwriting sensation, Bec Stevens, and, exclusively for the Melbourne show, the vibrant and enthusiastic duo, Sick Visor. This lineup brought an evening of diverse musical experiences to the table, all homegrown right here in Australia.

To start, let us talk about Sick Visor. It is quite common for the opening acts to sometimes struggle to pull in the crowd, especially when everyone is eagerly awaiting the headliners. However, this duo had us hooked from the start. With Alex Moses on lead vocals and guitar, and Katie Lovelock on drums and backing vocals, their infectious energy filled the venue, setting the perfect vibe for the night. With gems from their discography like their recent single “Tricycle,” irresistibly upbeat “Feeling Alright Forever,” their music has a laid-back charm and unwavering positivity that is bound to bring a smile to your face.

Taking the stage next, was Bec Stevens, who had previously brought Sick Visor on her “Big Worry” album tour. In contrast to Sick Visor, Bec had delivered an emotional set that would have you fighting back tears. Bec Stevens’ songwriting often delves into personal experiences and emotions, covering themes such as self-discovery, relationships, mental health, and navigating life’s challenges. Through her lyrics and emotive delivery, she crafts songs that resonate with listeners on a deep and introspective level. Stevens’ music serves as a platform for soul-searching and connection, inviting audiences to explore the complexities of the human experience alongside her. What personally had me on the brink of my emotions, was “James’ Song” from Stevens’ album “Big Worry.” The song is dedicated to Stevens’ late friend, James, who originally composed it and sent it over voice notes, a tribute to his memory. Through heartfelt lyrics and emotive melodies, Stevens navigates themes of mourning, reminiscence, and the bittersweet nature of memories. Bec had even sampled his voice to play as backing vocals to give props to the original mastermind behind the song.

After Bec had wrapped up her set, it was time for Yours Truly to take the spotlight. But not before the “Sonic X Theme” got the crowd hyped during the pre-show setlist leading up the headlining act. The live band consisting of drummer Henry Beard, bassist Nat Sherwood, guitarist Teddie Winder-Haron and Mikaila Delgado powering the vocals, opened with Yours Truly’s highest streamed track “High Hopes” from their EP “Afterglow.” The entire crowd’s vocal cords were given a workout, not even a full song into their set! Everyone screamed along as Delgado urged them to scream louder, the passion that came from both the stage and the floor alike were symbiotic.

Melbourne was giving the Sydney band everything they got for the final stop of their tour. This energy kept up throughout the night, with the entire venue helping Delgado with the vocals for more hits like “Funeral Home” and “Circles,” then the band took a few minutes to mellow out with the crowd, performing one of Yours Truly’s slower tracks, “Undersize.”

A little further into the set, Teddie took a moment to connect with the crowd to test if they were still engaged. After the undeniable fact that everyone was ready for more, he proceeded to introduce the purpose of their tour, their new single “Call My Name.” With a remarkable backing track intro, this song demonstrates the band’s unwavering quest for growth and their ability to evolve within the dynamic music scene.

Midway through the set, Delgado stepped aside, allowing Henry to showcase his talents on the drums with a jaw-dropping solo. After nearly 45 seconds of Henry’s solo, the rest of the band seamlessly transitioned into the next track on the setlist, “Hallucinate,” taken from their EP “Is This What I Look Like?” Yours Truly is the perfect example of a band that puts 110% into everything they do, which is why there is no doubt of their continued growth in the near future. To wrap up their set, they finished with “Walk Over My Grave,” the opening track off their EP “Is This What I Look Like?” Everyone was giving it their all to power through the final song of the night, to bring a perfect close to the “Call Me My Name” tour. Concluding their performance without an encore, the band gathered for a group photo with the sold-out venue, a heartfelt gesture of gratitude towards their dedicated fans.

Yours Truly have really made a name for themselves in the pop-punk music scene, as well as raising the profile of Australian artists and earning recognition in the industry. However, as the tour comes to its end and “Call Me My Name” enjoys widespread success, the question is: What is next for Yours Truly?.
