Pumarosa Drop New Single, Announce Debut Album + Sell Out Australian Tour
Premiering last night on BBC Radio 1 with Huw Stephens, East-London five-piece Pumarosa have unveiled their stunning new single ‘Dragonfly‘, alongside news of a much-anticipated debut album, ‘The Witch‘ due out May 19 via Fiction Records (Crystal Castles, The Maccabees, Kate Tempest, The Big Moon, The Amazons) / Caroline Australia. Gracing Sydney and Melbourne stages alongside co-headliners LANY at the end of this month, Pumarosa have now also SOLD OUT dates for their first ever Australian tour.
‘Dragonfly’ is an ethereal, effortless return from Pumarosa featuring pristine production and haunting vocals from lead singer and visual artist Isabel Muñoz-Newsome. Describing ‘Dragonfly’, the band write: “we are so used to protecting ourselves from each other that when the time comes to be open, sometimes we can’t do it. Dragonfly is about shedding this armour.”
With multi-dimensional sounds which rise from nothing to expansive, free-spirited frenzies, ‘The Witch’ digs deeper into Pumarosa’s stunningly surreal yet danceable and emphatic sound. ‘The Witch’ will soundtrack a vivid journey of the band thus far: from the shared Tottenham warehouse they formed in to the derelict Italian cinema in which they honed their sound, and finessed in the South London studio of Dan Carey (Kate Tempest, Bat For Lashes, TOY).
After setting SXSW on fire in 2016, being labelled as ‘Ones to Watch’ by Line of Best Fit and honing their live show on tour with the likes of Glass Animals, Kate Tempest and Everything Everything, Pumarosa will soon share a festival bill with The Pixies and The Kills in Japan this month before landing in Australia for debut shows in Sydney (SOLD OUT!) and Melbourne on Feb 28th and March 1st alongside co-headliners LANY.
It’s two years since Pumarosa formed, but you’d be forgiven for thinking they hadn’t spent a day apart. Front woman Isabel Muñoz-Newsome and drummer Nicholas Owen started the band by chance. A friend was eager to start a new music project and invited the two to come and play, but said friend never showed up. Instead, the pair were left to lay the foundations of what would become Pumarosa.
Touching on subjects as diverse as art, politics and sexual identity, Pumarosa have won over fans and music critics alike. With praise coming from The Guardian, Stereogum, The Fader, DIY, i-D and NME, they earned the position of #1 Most Blogged About Artist on Hype Machine and have received radio play crossing the pacific, from BBC 6Music, Radio X and Annie Mac and Huw Stephens at Radio 1 to our very own triple j.
