Zoo Twilights wrapped up over the weekend, with Melbourne Zoo thrilled to announce the 2019 series as the biggest and most successful one yet!

Melbourne Zoo Director Michelle Bruggemann thanked members of the public who made their way to the zoo between January 25 and March 9.

“Zoo Twilights welcomed a record breaking 49,000 music and wildlife lovers to the lush lawns of Melbourne Zoo – an unprecedented number of punters for the series,” Mrs Bruggemann said.

Boasting a stand-out line-up of some of the most exciting and seminal artists touring the world right now, the 2019 series also saw many second and third shows added, and the highest number of sold out shows ever, with 15 of the 17 concerts selling out completely. HUGE.

The best bit? All proceeds have contributed to the Zoo’s fight to save the Eastern Barred Bandicoot from extinction. The very shy and extremely cute bandicoot has been Zoo Twilights’ flagship animal for the past five years. The species is listed as extinct in the wild on mainland Australia, but after the money raised from Zoo Twilights, as well as more than 25 years of recovery efforts, there are now 1200 bandicoots in existence.

Zoo Twilights 2019 invited concert-goers to pick a spot under the stars for unforgettable nights of music accompanied by food and drinks from some of the city’s best food trucks.

The series was jam packed with epic moments and unforgettable memories including a touching performance by Briggs, Archie Roach, and Alice Skye for the opening weekend of Zoo Twilights on January 26. The spellbinding show had an energy of strength and celebration, with guest appearances from Uncle Jack, BIRDZ, Philly and Ecca Vandal.

The final weekend of Zoo Twilights saw Marlon Williams take to the stage for the second last show of 2019. The New Zealander crooned his way further into the hearts of the crowd as he debuted new music as well as showing off his Make Way for Love album with passion and intensity. He and his band, the Yarra Benders, certainly left the audience wanting more.

The final show of the 2019 series saw Australian electronic music legends, The Presets, take to the stage for a dynamic finale to the hugely successful series of concerts. The iconic duo had children bouncing on their parents’ shoulders and grandparents dancing to the beats of ‘Martini’ and ‘Until The Dark’, while tunes like ‘My People’ and ‘This Boy’s In Love’ provoked nostalgic feelings of parties in years gone by from everyone in attendance. The perfect show to wrap up all that is special about Zoo Twilights – music that everyone can enjoy.

Melbourne Zoo is delighted with the success of the 2019 shows and can’t wait for 2020 to get under way. To stay on the pulse of next year’s series head HERE.
