Between You & Me embark on their biggest National Headline tour yet, bringing Towns and USA friends Young Culture along.

Melbourne starts the tour, and of course winds are blistering cold as the city heads into Winter. Rumours backed by photos, is that two excited fans gathered at 170 Russell from as early as 9am that morning. Their patience would be tested as the show start is to be delayed nearly 40 minutes. Maybe setting up for Triple J filming was to blame, there were more swivel and pillar lights on stage than I could count. Who knows? Luckily the crowd seemed content to just peruse the merch table, hit up the bar and mingle.

Towns

.

After a long wait, Towns hailing from Adelaide takes the stage to cheerful claps and whistles from the crowd. The indie rock duo dives into their set, bringing a relaxed fun energy that drew everyone’s attention. Both guitarist and drummer also sing, so props there already in conjunction with bringing super slick melodies.

Their latest single “Birthday” stirred the crowd up nicely with its power chords and punchy drums. Reminiscing a bit of the old school Lustra and Sum 41 sound, Towns combines this with modern elements of simmering synth and Australiana nonchalant vibes. Their cover of “Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous” was super fun to listen to and got some of the more, reserved audience members to loosen up their vocal cords.

YOUNG CULTURE

Young Culture were on next, and they too brought a warm, fun vibe. Almost immediately as they started peculiarities arose. The floor and air were shaking. Unsuccessfully trying to concentrate on the vocals, it became apparent the vibrations which made it feel like my eardrums were going to fall out, was the bass. I’ve been to countless shows at 170 Russell and have experienced this to a degree with other acts. Whether it was the sound engineer on, gear or live mix something needed adjusting.

Despite not quite landing sound quality, Young Culture brought the energy. Magnan put on a splendid performance as a front man, engaging with the crowd, dancing to the music and quite clearly knew how to command a microphone. Despite their sound issues the crowd loved them! They were screaming the words and the front few rows were bouncing to the beat. Following their first performance in Australia, they’ve secured a bunch of new fans.

The night started off lagging in time, but a round of applause is needed for the stage crew and venue staff. Speeding through soundcheck, and prepping gear between sets, no more faffing around.

Following a short intermission, Between You & Me kicks it off with “Dakota”. Starting strong with a classic the whole crowd knew, it guaranteed mass sing along and an immediate jostling mosh pit. Keeping the energy high they follow up with “Super Villain” barely pausing for breath.

Moving onto “Nevermind” next, they’re finally playing tracks from their independently released EP “Sh!t Yeah”. Touring as an independent band for the first time, promoting their latest independent work the boys seem invigorated. With their infectious enthusiasm and dynamic stage presence, the band ignites a spark that spreads like wildfire through the crowd.

Between You & Me have always acknowledged their fans and are superb at putting on an engaging performance. Their newest tracks “In the Middle”, “Yeah!” and especially “Kill My Vibe” have hit a home run.

The venue pulses with excitement as the band pours their hearts into each song, and the crowd can’t help but be swept up in the moment, their spirits lifted by the sheer joy radiating from the stage. It’s a symbiotic relationship where the band’s energy fuels the audience’s desire to let loose and have the time of their lives, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone.

A surprise appearance by Miss Delgado from Yours Truly, added to this unforgettable night. Lending her powerhouse vocals to “Go To Hell”, Delgado displays her impressive vocal range despite no warm up. From the squeals and phones shooting into the air, seems the crowd could not believe their luck, at being able to hear this duet sung live as it should be.

Every member has been effortlessly vibrant tonight, making it seem so easy to play an instrument on stage. Wilson especially has been a charismatic lead singer, even showing off some groovy dance moves. Karagiozis (Bassy) gets up on the barrier, and the crowd knows it’s time to honour the “Deadbeat” tradition, to open up a circle pit.

Rowdy and raucous, the crowd can’t get enough carrying the high vibes into “Butterflies”. A hook laden track with all the best elements of pop punk, and a fabulous way to end the set.

Between You & Me brought an electrifying energy the moment they stepped on stage, which the crowd reciprocated with this whole night. The road to independence shines bight for the Melbourne quintet. Catch them while you can on the remainder of their National Tour.
