Plini, the matchless Australian guitarist, teamed up with the dynamic jazz fusion ensemble Sungazer and the innovative Polish guitarist Jakub Żytecki for the grand finale of the “Mirage” tour down at Max Watts Melbourne. Undoubtedly, this concert was one for the books, with each band pushing the boundaries of music and redefining what it means to be a musician.

The evening commenced with an electrifying performance by Jakub, accompanied by bassist and producer Michal Sarapata, and drummer Józef Rusinowski. Despite the venue being already filled with passionate music enthusiasts, Jakub effortlessly captivated the audience with his genre-defying repertoire. From intricate melodies to explosive rhythms, Jakub delivered a diverse array of musical pieces that left the crowd in awe of his virtuosity and creativity.

Jakub stood out as the sole artist of the entire evening to grace the crowd with vocals, adding an extra layer of depth to his performance. Nevertheless, the majority of the night remained predominantly instrumental. Despite the vocal interlude, his performance remained true to his signature instrumental focus, captivating the audience with his masterful guitar work and musical versatility.

Next up, Sungazer for their debut Melbourne show, featuring renowned music theory YouTuber Adam Neely and drummer Shawn Crowder, took the stage. Joining them on tour to round out their ensemble were saxophonist Jared Yee and guitarist Shubh Saran.

To ignite their performance, they emerged from the shadows, engulfed in a cascade of flashing lights that obscured their figures. A pulsating backing track surged, gradually intensifying the anticipation until the moment the lights unveiled their presence. Each member of the band stepped into view adorned in vibrant matching outfits, a kaleidoscope of pink, blue, and yellow hues, setting the stage ablaze with their electrifying presence.

After the initial musical offerings, Adam gracefully shifted gears, turning his attention to the eager crowd. With a charming smile, he embarked on a delightful introduction of each band member, drawing the audience closer to the heart of their performance. As the introductions concluded, Adam’s infectious energy permeated the venue, prompting an invitation for all to partake in the “Sungazer Two Step.”

With enthusiasm rippling through the crowd, the dance commenced. The pulse of the music synchronized with the coordinated movements of the audience, as they gracefully swayed first to the right, then to the left, in perfect harmony with the jazz ensemble on stage. The atmosphere crackled with collective joy as the entire venue became a symphony of motion, uniting everyone in a rhythmic celebration of music and community.

As the night’s grand finale approached, it was time for Plini to take the stage, framed by his unmistakable backdrop: the iconic crescent moon, a recurring motif adorning his album covers, merchandise and promotional materials alike. Joining him on stage were his bandmates: guitarist Jake Howsam Lowe, bassist Simon Grove, and Chris Allison behind the drum kit. Opening with “The Red Fox,” taken from the album “Mirage,” the crowd was not ready for what was about to be the most surreal hour and a half of pure musical talent.

As Plini’s set approached its halfway mark, a group of attendees, radiating more energy than the rest of the crowd, decided to take a unique approach. They settled into the middle of the venue, choosing to sit and fully immerse themselves in the performance. Catching sight of this unexpected scene, Plini momentarily cast a curious glance into the crowd.

Following the song, Plini engaged with the audience, seizing the moment to share a thought sparked by the sight before him. With a blend of sincerity and humor, he reflected on the evolving nature of his music and its potential for grander stages. Playfully musing that perhaps his intricate compositions might be better appreciated in a larger venue with seating.

After sharing his lighthearted observation, Plini playfully challenged the crowd to a unique experience. He invited everyone to take a seat for the entirety of the next song, promising that they could stand again once Jake unleashed his blistering solo. The audience complied, eagerly settling in for the performance. As Jake’s solo came to life, the crowd rose to their feet in unison, swept up in the exhilarating moment.

Towards the end of Plini’s set, the final song of the night, “Electric Sunrise,” would mark the end of the “Mirage” tour. However, this would not be the usual composition, after the first few minutes of the piece, Plini brought Jakub and guitarist of Sungazer, Shubh Saran back to the stage. Plini allowed one by one, Jakub and Saran to portray their musical talents in a solo. Shortly thereafter, what unfolded was truly remarkable. Without prior announcement, saxophonist Jared made a surprise return to the stage, igniting the atmosphere with an electrifying sax solo.

Following Jared’s awe-inspiring sax solo, each member of the band took center stage, showcasing solos that seamlessly built upon one another, creating an irresistible tapestry of musical brilliance. As they traded solos, each performance complemented the last, escalating to a crescendo of unparalleled intensity and synergy.

It became a challenge for the audience to decide where to direct their gaze, as the stage was ablaze with talent and energy. Yet, as the final segment approached, the band united in perfect harmony, elevating the atmosphere to a level beyond comprehension.

As the last notes rang out, each member took a moment to bow, as the crowd applauded the remarkable display they had witnessed. The “Mirage” tour had officially come to a close, a phenomenal display of musical talent. The tireless dedication and unwavering commitment of every member involved in the tour had finally reached its pinnacle, and the venue had ascended to a realm of music beyond compare.

In the end, the tour was a testament to hard work and dedication, culminating in an unforgettable musical experience for Max Watts.
